Flake Fun

18 Dec 2016 - Can you believe that Christmas is only a week away?  Crazy!  For some reason the holidays snuck up on us faster this year than before.

The last three weeks have been fairly normal as far as working and remodeling.  We are getting close on the house but haven't had quite a much time recently to work on it with holiday parties and things.

Yesterday we went down to Mesa to help Nathan and his family move which was an adventure!  There is always more stuff than you think there will be and it was their first time moving so they were learning the ropes!  It is a cute little place that they have purchased and they seem to like it.  We ended the day with a surprise birthday party for Papa who turned 85!  It was fun to see some of the family for an hour or so.

We are trying to wrap things up here so we can get up to Utah for a couple of days.  It won't be very many days but we are hoping for some quality time, even if the quantity isn't an option!

Love you all!!!

Nilsson News

Well, there isn't much to post here.  Henry has been sick since the start of the week with a super runny nose, cough, etc.  Thankfully he has been fairly pleasant about it.  Since he likes to hang around on his mother so much, he decided to give his germs to me.  I've had a sore throat, cough and no voice since about Wednesday.  I was pretty bummed to miss out on all the partying, as was Eliza.  We made a few Christmas presents for the siblings that were at Grandma's and that was pretty enjoyable.  I hope we get to see some footage of the amazing cousins concert!  Garrett was able to get a few more walls built in the basement and we are pretty much to the point of needing an electrician (calling Scott!  Where are you Scott?!).  We are still trying to adjust to this crazy winter weather.  One day it's 10 degrees outside with a bitter wind blowing and the next day it's warm and raining.  I hope our animals will survive alright.
We hope all of you are enjoying this delightful time of year and are trying to keep it from slipping by too quickly!  I always wish it could last a little bit longer!  Love you all!
P.S.  Congrats to Emma on making callbacks for the performing missionaries!!!!  I wish I was as awesome as you!

Hart Happenings

So, I guess technology is great as long as it works, but when it stops working I have to face the embarrassing reality that said technology has made me lazy.  Case in point: I'm so used to using my phone to post on the blog and upload pictures that since the Blogger app on my phone has started malfunctioning I have just not been able to muster up the energy to pick up the computer to blog instead.  LAZY ME!  I'm now turning over a new not lazy leaf and am posting today via our trusty laptop.
We have enjoyed a quieter week than normal which has been so nice and we've been able to make some nice progress on a few of our projects.  I feel like we have had company every weekend since we moved here and our weeks have been spent cleaning up after the visits and preparing for the next one.  One of the things we looked forward to the most about this house is the ability to have space for people to come and visit, so we have enjoyed those visits but they will be even better when we feel a little more settled.
The 2nd annual Christmas party was a blast!  We had so much fun and were so glad to hang out with all those who were able to come.  We were sorry that Ruth was sick, and that Victoria had to work, and then we were sorry that Joe got sick and that Nick got peed on, but it was great to rub shoulders in spite of all those things!  We have the very best family!  The cousins are so talented and all get along so well.  I was delighted to just watch them enjoy each other.
We got our Christmas tree and decorations up, to the joy of the boys.  It's such a great time of year and it's nice to have some snow to go along with the cold temperatures and the winter songs on the radio.
I don't have a lot more to write here.  I think I'm really tired and my brain is feeling slightly sluggish.  But we up here are huge fans of our Belliston side and are glad that we stay in touch and have a good time when we do get together.
  Warm winter wishes!!!
  Hope everyone is feeling better!

P. S.

Here is the photo I forgot to send with my post...  Dad's favorite companion, his trainer, Elder Thacker is the newly retired seminary and institute teacher - in the beard and long hair :)  He is really great, a sound and well-grounded gospel teacher.  I hope you all get to meet him someday.  The couple in the middle met in the Adelaide mission. The one with the tie is Elder Hammond (who Emma thinks is "a whole man" is Dad's executive secretary right now. Great group of dedicated missionaries of yesteryear....

Hyde Park Homefront

You would have loved seeing Dad yesterday at the mini mission reunion we hosted at Dad's church. When a sister missionary who was in Adelaide with Dad  called and asked if he knew what had happened exactly 40 years ago, he was stumped.  She then reminded him that they were in the Mission Home in Salt Lake exactly 40 years ago.  They talked and decided to try and get the local missionaries together.  There were only 7, besides Dad, who were able to attend, but they sure had a great time reminiscing!  They brought photo albums and other pictures to share and discuss.  It was so fun and fueled the missionary fire in those old guys!

I had lunch with my high school friends, Ilene and Lora this week also.  Sounds like we are dwelling on the past around here.... It was nice to visit and catch up on what's going on with those who were so important in helping me come into the church and acquire a testimony.  They are great gals and still an inspiration to me.

We were delighted to visit Idaho this week.  We took up some beef to the Harts and Nilssons, then got to stay and learn about the Eiffel Tower, paper airplanes, beet boxing, Beethoven and fossils at their great brain activity.  It was thoroughly delightful!

This morning I attended a birth and missed church in our ward.  I did return home in time to get to a different ward Sacrament meeting.  There was a very rich spirit in that ward.  They were all fasting for a member of their ward, former bishopric member, who learned just after Thanksgiving that he has pancreatic cancer.  There is no treatment and he will likely be gone in a few weeks.  It's amazing what unity does for a ward, or a family, or a group of friends who are focused on a common purpose. Their hearts were truly one and there was a tangible outpouring of love and peace. I was glad to be there.

I am sending an invitation tomorrow for the family Christmas party.  Please feel invited, but not pressured to come. I will also email it so you'll have a few more days to plan.  Love you all!

Nilsson News

Whoa!  This week has ended up being crazy!  I was in charge of Eliza's playgroup and that is always a little stressful.  There are five little girls and they are full of energy.  Henry decided to show off one of his new found tantrums and the girls were quite taken back.  I then realized that every one of the girls except Eliza is the youngest child in their families and they had never witnessed something as exciting as that!
Another exciting event was getting our donkey's hooves trimmed.  Our wonderful neighbor came over who is a farrier and the first two donkeys went fine.  The last three were the youngest ones and they put on quite the rodeo!  I'm sure it was quite the sight to behold this very pregnant lady trying to manage these bucking and kicking burros.  They might be mini but they are mighty!  We have some training to work on, obviously.
We spent some time with the Harts and that is always delightful.  We were going to go on a field trip to the glass blower but it ended up being cancelled.  Luckily the kids were okay with just playing with each other.  I tried to help Elise with some projects but I really did not feel very helpful.  My mind still has a ton of will power and energy but I soon realize that there is a large lump in my middle that limits my abilities.  We were able to attend Ian's choir concert and it was very delightful.
Emma, as for ideas for the 12 days I am really lacking in the creativity department.  You could somehow find a scripture that refers to each of the numbers for each day.  Bookmarks, keychains, candles, pictures, and goodies like you already mentioned, are a few ideas.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at some point during this season!  I think you should all vote as to whether or not you think the Flakes should extend their vacation time to at least a full week.  Our family is in the affirmative.  If the vote is unanimous, Flakes, you have no choice.

...And Loving It

Happy December y'all! Hope your days are filled with holiday things!
So I'm enlisting your help.  I want to do the 12 days of Christmas for the seminary teachers at sky view and I have no ideas... and I have to start tomorrow if I do the 12 days of Christmas school days.... I thought of ornaments and cookies and cupcakes and junk... But that's literally all I've got... So if you think of anything I can do let me know pronto!
I really don't have a lot to post today.  Life be all good mostly.  AP Gov is the bestest class ever and you missed out if you didn't take it.  Ruth remembers Mr. Rigby, and he sure remembers her.
#whyI'mcalledminiBelliston.  Good times.  Well, I'm sure holiday cheer is more abundant with little kids running around... Don't tell the parental unit but it's a bit boring around here.  Mostly that's on me with work and homework and friends etc. I'm way excited to see you all soon at the party or at the real deal.  It'll be good times! Love ya!

Hyde Park Homefront

Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We had a lovely time with the family who were able to make it here this year.  Ruth's family arrived Wed. night, with Mannings and Thomas and Victoria joining us on Thursday.  We had a first time ever experience of having the turkey done before we were actually ready!  It was a hearty feast with many blessings to reflect on.  Ruth and Emma and I ventured out to do some shopping early on Friday, but only made it to one store.  That was plenty!

Emma is enjoying her job and is starting another trimester tomorrow.  We hope it will be a bit easier this trimester so she can finish up her American School classes quickly.  She's looking around for options of things to do during the summer and is sending in college applications already.  Who can believe that she is doing these adult things???!!!  Time has gone way too fast for my liking...

I attended two deliveries last week, including a set of twins, and have another ready any day now.  Altogether there are four moms who are due before the end of the year.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will be able to do all of our family things without babies interrupting things, but we'll see what happens.

Thomas seems to be recovering quite well.  Alex has been down here doing business a couple of times and has dropped in to visit. That's been great!  We feel like our family isn't so far away when that happens.  Ruth and Lauren have kindly been helping Emma prepare an audition to be a YPM in Nauvoo.  She's younger and doesn't have as much experience as most other applicants, she thinks, but you never know until you try.  She would love to go to Nauvoo!  If that's where the Lord wants her to be, it will all work out.

Nilsson News

We had a wonderful week!  Garrett was able to take the entire week off and it was a lot of fun having him home.  We drove down to Layton last Sunday to do some birthday celebrating for our boys.  We saw a few friends a family while we were down but it was mostly a trip focused on just being together.  Elise met us in Layton and she and I went down to IKEA to do a "little" shopping.  4 1/2 hours later we were heading back home.  I don't think there is such a thing as a quick trip to that store.  We had a good time.  While the moms were gone, the dads and then kids had a fun night together playing, watching Studio C and Tricked.  It is hard to get enough of those Harts!
Garrett started work on the basement.  He has decided that he likes to do each thing at least twice.  cut each 2x4 twice, nail the framing together and pull it apart at least twice.  It is a good way to ensure that everything is done correctly although it isn't a very good time saver.  He was able to get several walls put up and all the insulation installed.  We are really close to needing an electrician (Scott where are you?!!).
We had a great Thanksgiving celebration with the Hyde Parkers, T and Victoria and the Mannings.  It was a small gathering but was full of laughs and good conversation.  We had some good pie that was made with a "Buttery, crispy, FLAKEY crust" (ask the Mannings to explain it).  Good times!  Mom, Emma and I went Black Friday shopping and had a good time.  I'm glad that I never tire of hanging out with my awesome family members.
We ended the week by going Christmas tree hunting with some friends from the ward.  It wasn't quite like our experience growing up since we had a lot of bush whacking to do, but it ended up successful.  Hope the rest of you enjoyed your holiday and are looking forward to the next one that is just around the corner!

Flake Fun

27 Nov 2016 - We hope that everyone had a very happy and filling Thanksgiving.  We enjoyed a small gathering with Scott's parents and his brother, Nathan and family.  It was pretty quiet but we enjoyed some good conversation and laughs.

I only worked 1 day this last week and Scott only worked 2 so we were able to get quite a bit done on the house...behold...

The carpet is in.  The upstairs tile is done (just a little left in the basement).  So, there is progress being made!

Hope that everyone has a great week!

Hyde Park Transitions

Hello, all.  What a week!  It started with being called to a birth last Sunday, the very moment Elise and Alex were picking up their boys to take them home (we had a very fun time with the boys, by the way, while the parents were in Washington).   All turned out very well at the birth and I only missed one night of sleep.

Emma had a tremendous week, as she alluded to.  She received her second Young Womanhood recognition and medallion.  It was quite special.  Then she received the highest award possible at the marching band closing dinner.  Dad and I were going to leave early to check on Thomas, but when I talked with one of the band staff she said I might really want to stay until the end of the awards.  Well, your baby sister received the Most Valuable Player award for this year.  It is voted on by her peers, who think she is pretty great (a good example, good leader, good friend) - which she is! Then she got a phone call to see if she wanted a temporary job (that may very well work into more permanent work) at Kitchen Kneads.  They need help with small jobs, like gift wrapping, etc., during the holiday season.  Looks like she'll be working instead of shopping on Black Friday this year!!

Thomas had surgery on Thursday and is realizing it may be a longer recovery than he anticipated.  He is draining and draining.  Dr. Blotter said everything went well and he was able to do everything he had planned to do.  In the end, it will be a blessing, but for now he's still pretty drugged up and can't taste anything or breathe through his nose, which is still bandaged.  Good thing he is young and healthy and "tough as a boot!"  He'll do fine, but it would be great to keep him in your prayers.

Dad recovered in time from Stake Conference last week to have a ward conference yesterday.  Both were very uplifting and instructive.  He always worries and frets and gets stomach aches during Stake Conference, but it always turns out really well.

Then I finished off the week with another all night, Sunday night, birth.  It was a beautiful birth also. Gotta love busy weeks like this with lots of good things happening.  We are excited to have the Nilssons and Mannings come for Thanksgiving!  It will be quieter than usual, but will be great to have someone spend the day with us!

Oh, I must tell a funny story....  So, I was getting ready for Stake Conference last Sunday and was nervous because I had to speak.  Emma was helping the Hart boys get some lunch.  They were playing a game at the table - "Whoever likes watermelon, raise your hand!"  They would take turns calling out something to like and vote on.  Then, Peter said, "Whoever likes pasta, raise your hand!" After a moment I heard Jack say, "All opposed, by the same sign!"  I laughed until I cried! So very funny!  So funny, in fact, that I had to tell it at the conference (which aided in calming my nerves) and the whole place roared with laughter!  Funny, funny Jack :)

P.S.  We are making plans for our 2nd annual Belliston Christmas party.  Please mark your calendars for December 10th.  You are welcome to come on the 9th, if you'd like!  We'll have food, family and fun!  I'll get some invites made soon and send them along.  If you have conflicts with that date, please let me know so we can schedule a time that will work for most of us.

Flake Fun

20 Nov 2016 - It has been quite a week here in Snowflake.  Work was fairly typical.

The carpet is scheduled to go in tomorrow so we had a lot to do this past week.  At the end of the week we got all of the upstairs tile in and grouted much to the aching of our backs, knees and hands.  But now, with a little clean up in the morning, we are ready for the carpet guys to come.  There is still a lot to do but at least the house is looking a bit more put together!  The weather has decided to get cold at night but the days are still fairly pleasant.

Our entire bishopric was put into stake callings so all three men are doing double duty until a new bishopric is called.

We are looking forward to a small Thanksgiving meal with Randy, Dona and Nathan's family.  Hope everyone else has some fun Thanksgiving plans.

That is about it for us.  Hope everyone is well.  Glad to hear from Victoria that Thomas is recuperating in fine fashion.  Have a great week!  We're grateful for all of you guys!

Manning Musings

Today was our Stake Conference. I always look forward to those meetings! There was a mix of topics but all very good. The two councilors in the Presidency were my favorite talks. President Sanders talked about seeing things as they really are. He is a younger guy and two of his daughters are in our Sunday School class. He told a story about this past summer he was experiencing all sorts of strange things with his vision where he couldn't see things sometimes that people pointed out, people looked different than he knew they looked, etc. He ended up having a brain tumor the size of a golf ball in his brain. He just had it removed and he is doing well but he compared how skewed our vision can be just in day to day life. We don't see things as they really so we need to be less judgmental, kinder and more understanding. The other councilor talked about keeping our children safe from spiritual dangers. He talked about the basics we should be doing in our homes and then he told a story about an older lady who wrote a personal history with 5 chapters in it. The chapter headings were like this: Chapter 1 - I walked down a street. There was a big hole. I fell in the hole. I eventually got out of the hole. Chapter 2 - I walked down the same street. There was a hole. I fell in the hole again. I worked hard and got out. Chapter 3 - I walked down the same street. I saw the hole. I fell in again! It must be a habit. I got out again. Chapter 4 - I walked down the same street. I saw the hole and walked around.
Chapter 5 - I took a different street. He compared this to parenting and just life in general. He said that we should look out for the holes in our lives and learn a better and different way. I really liked that.
Other than that life is pretty much the same. Nick works hard all week and things are going pretty well at seminary. Wesley just got his first tooth! He is growing cuter and rounder by the day! Can't wait to see some of you at Thanksgiving and even more of you at Christmas!

....And Sorta Loving It

Well folks, thanks for all growing up without me.  Senior year is fun but what a pain.  Goodness I'm glad you all survived so I know I will.  Applying isn't really hard... but senioritus is a real thing and I lack all motivation to do anything.  Anyway, it really isn't so bad, I just wish I didn't have to do it.  This week I'll get my second medallion which is pretty cool and I'm excited.  This last week we babysat Ian Jack and Peter which was great, but I now voice a warning.  Some kids are much more self-reliant than others, so I may have forgotten that Jack and Peter were in the tub when I was babysitting on Saturday.  After about an hour they were both out, dry and dressed, all by themselves! It was amazing! Then I went in the bathroom to empty the tub and then I began to wonder what in the world they'd washed themselves with.... needless to say we're without dog shampoo now.  Ian and I had a good laugh about that. Well, we know they won't have ticks or fleas anymore.
I went over to Thomas's house earlier this week and it is confirmed that they have the cutest dog living in their house.  At least I think it's a dog... his name is Rudy and is about as big as T's iphone.  It's a little disconcerting to see him walk around because he reminds me of those little orange and black striped caterpillar that will get squished.  But he's real cute!
Band is over which is AWESOME! I'll miss it but it's fine.  We took fourth at BOA which was dumb but that's what we deserved so it's whatever.  Disneyland was so fun! being there with 138 of your best friends is the greatest.  I've forgotten how much I like crazy rides, and when I'm in charge of the next family gathering, well, just get ready to go broke.  Just a cool story from my trip: we went to church in St. George the day after our competition before we headed to Disneyland.  We warned the ward that we went to that we were coming (there were over 100 of us there) so they made room.  We filled the entire overflow and some seats in front of that.  It was pretty cool to see pretty much our whole band file into church.  Not a lot of things are like that.  Anyway, this ward was so tiny anyway, and they were really short on youth.  So Bishop Pederson asked their bishop if he'd like any help blessing and passing the sacrament as they had no priests, teachers, and only four deacons.  The bishop was so grateful and said he'd love to have help.  Well, when Bishop asked the block of white shirts sitting in the back if they'd be willing, he had to turn down most of them because they didn't need that many.  It was a super cool experience to see all my good friends ready and worthy to pass the sacrament at a moments notices.  I'm pretty lucky to be surrounded by these people just so you know ;) Sorry it's long but I just miss y'all and hope all's well :)

Flake Fun

13 November 2016 - It has been an interesting and productive week.  We had our last drive through flu shot clinic on Friday and I am glad that they are over.  Scott went to Flagstaff for an economic update (they are cautiously optimistic for the future). And we did a lot of tile at the house.

We had our stake conference today and it was quite the event.  Some of you may know that Taylor and Snowflake have been at odds for a while but today a new stake was made and we were moved to the new Centennial stake which consists of both Snowflake and Taylor wards.  Our wonderful bishop was called to be the new stake president so there will be a lot of changes in the next couple of weeks in our ward.  Two of the wards in the old Snowflake stake had pieces carved out of them and put into a Taylor ward, but no boundary changes in our ward.   Always great to be a part of history.

I have been thinking the last couple of weeks about preparedness and being self sufficient.  And in light of Lauren's comment about sharing recipes and dinner ideas, I thought I would share something that I have started doing again - a 3 month menu.  Our ward preparedness guru challenged us to have a 3 month supply of food and at first that seemed overwhelming.  Then I sat down with a 3 month menu and made a list of all of our "regular" meals.  There were quite a few of them and I just started putting them into the calendar.  Nothing was repeated more than twice in a month and there were a few spots to fit in the occasional meals.  Being able to look at the calendar gave me an idea of the foods that we eat on a very regular basis and now I am starting to stock up to make sure that those items are in our food storage and freezer.  It also gave me an idea of how much food I really need to freeze or can.  I'm not staying it would work for everybody but it has been nice for us so far.

If you are looking for something new...fajitas with leeks is REALLY yummy!  It adds a bit of umph.  We also really enjoyed Tuscan Pasta.

Ingredients:

Pasta (I like penne, bow ties or something of that nature)
Sliced chicken breast (you can do cubes too if you want)
1 pk cream cheese
sun dried tomatoes
4 T butter
1/2 T basil (if you have fresh it is REALLY good)
4 cloves garlic
2 cups milk
6 oz parmesan
salt and pepper

Cook noodles.
Grill/fry chicken.
Remove chicken from pan and saute the garlic in the butter.
Add basil and cream cheese.  Stir until smooth.
Add tomatoes.
Wisk in milk.
Stir in parmesan, salt and pepper
Stir in chicken and serve over noodles.

This recipe freezes pretty well too if you would like to freeze leftovers!

I hope that you all have a great week!

Manning Musings

It is good to finally get a chance to post on the blog!  I enjoy reading your posts every week and it is good to keep up with all the changes going on in each family.
Things are pretty much the same here each week. Nick is busy with seminary teaching, guitar teaching and gigging. I play with Wesley and life is good.
The seminary teaching is going better than at the beginning of school. Wesley and I went up last week to participate in the lesson and to meet students which was very fun! It is a rigorous adventure but we are learning a lot of things about each other and ourselves!
Wesley is at a very fun stage. Most people don't know this because he gets pretty serious around other people but he is a chatter box and can be quite loud at times. He is starting to eat solids and roll over and scoot. He has very strong preferences and likes to do things for himself. Sleeping is not one of his preferences.
Yesterday we met with the bishop for tithing settlement and talked for awhile about the youth in our ward. Nick and I teach the youth sunday school for ages 14-18. We learned some pretty sad things about the youth in our Stake. There are about 8 missionaries out from our Stake and there should be a lot more than that. Many of the kids in our ward have parents in jail or really difficult family situations. The bishop said it just seems that parents are checking out of parenting responsibilities and don't care what their kids do. Sad stuff. So thank you for being good people who are invested in good things!
Congrats to the Harts for their new home! Good luck to the Flakes on their house work! We can't wait to see you next month!

P.S. So I am thinking what I should make for dinner which is a question I ask myself multiple times a week. What would you all think of doing something with recipes or meal planning on the blog? Just if you want, people might put a really great meal down that they had and if people want the recipe they can ask. Thoughts?

Flake Fun

6 November 2016 - First off, thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.  It was a wonderful day.   The past couple of weeks have been busy.  Scott's boss changed jobs so things are kind of in chaos in his department but hopefully soon there will be a new, permanent boss.  I have been assisting with drive thru flu shot clinics which are pretty popular in the communities that we take them to.  But enough about jobs...

The weather has finally decided to feel like fall.  We built our first fire this week which was fun.  Luckily we had put a stack of firewood on our back porch because it rained for a couple of days straight and the rest of the wood pile is soaked!

The house is coming along.  We started tile yesterday and didn't get a whole lot done but it feels like it is the beginning of the end!  I spent Friday doing some painting and once I got back from the shot clinic on Saturday we did the tile.  It was an exhausting feat but it is going to look really nice when it is said and done.  We made an appointment to have the carpet installed the week of Thanksgiving so now we have a deadline and a list of things that have to be done before the carpet guys come!

Congrats to the Harts for getting into their house!  It looks like you guys have been really busy doing fun stuff...and moving!  I don't know how fun the actual act of moving is but it always is nice to have family around to give a sense of organization when everything is in chaos!

Today we had an interesting relief society lesson that struck home to me.  It was on what one sister called "Mormon Motherhood Martyrdom"; the idea that we as women will NEVER measure up.  It was a good reminder for me that I don't have to be everything, in fact, I can't be.

Have you guys gotten the big emergency preparedness push in your wards?  It is hitting pretty hard down here it seems and it is quite interesting.

Can't wait to see all of you next month!!!

Hart Happenings

So our post from last week never got published so I retried and that is why you are getting a week old post today. It has been an intense week as we pack all of our belongings and prepare to move tomorrow. We went to our new ward today which was great and totally different from where we have been. No lingering cigarette smells and no cussing in class. But we loved those aspects of our last ward; the diversity, the all-are-welcome mindset, and the lovely little widow ladies. It will be an adjustment but we feel so good about the move which makes us really excited to see what lies in store.....
Thanks to Ruth and her fan for all the boxes and for letting us hang out in her peaceful, clean house while our is complete chaos. Oh, and for feeding us!!! Thanks guys!
Life is fun and new at the moment!

Our nice to eat you door for Halloween.

Autumn in Hyde Park

Well, it's awfully quiet around here! Emma has been gone since Friday. Chester was gone until Monday morning. What a lonely weekend... Well, just Sunday. Dad and I took off in a rush for St. George on Friday after a very cooperative baby came just in time. We stopped at the birth center in Ogden long enough to take care of things there, then took off for the big band competition down south.

The band did a remarkable job and played and marched their hearts out!! They were incredible, competing with bands twice their size with the same energy and sound. They took 3rd in the state and 4th out of 24 bands at Bands of America competition. Emma had three solos that were just amazing! They didn't do as well as they had hoped, after taking 2nd place the last two years, but they really did well. I think the disappointment disappeared as soon as they were on their way to Disneyland! They have spent the last two days there having a grand old time! Becca and Darin drove down to watch the parade at Disneyland that the band played in. They spent time on some rides and having lunch together with Emma, which delighted her greatly.

We got home late Saturday night and had meetings all day on Sunday. It was a wonderful opportunity to have dinner with and listen to Elder Uceda speak to the YSA in the Spectrum. What a humble man with amazing stories of sacrifice and dedication. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him.

I picked Chester up at the vet on Monday morning and he was sick. I guess he felt bullied at the kennel and ended up with intestinal issues, at least that's what the vet said. It could be the shots they gave him. He's had a few accidents since we got him home and had to be taken out to the bathroom several times in the night last night. We hope he feels safe and loved soon so we can get some sleep!

I'm excited for Emma to return tomorrow, though I know she's not going to be very thrilled to be home. She'll come back to a boat load of homework and stress, but hopefully will get through it by reflecting on the wonderful experiences she's had recently.

We are also excited for the Harts to move into their new home soon! We can't wait to go up and help them get things put away and organized.

Today was a great success for me when I tended Wesley while his mother taught piano lessons. We went for a walk and he didn't much like the stroller, so I carried him home and sang to him and he settled down and enjoyed the walk. We sat on the porch and played and talked, but when it got cold enough that I thought I should take him in, he heard his mom talking and decided he'd had enough of me. But by then the lessons were over! We are making headway - hooray!!!

Thomas is going to have surgery sooner than later. He is scheduled for November 17th. We hope he is well enough to enjoy Thanksgiving the next week...

Lastly, but not leastly, very happy birthday wishes to Jenn!  I know you're working on your house tonight, but hope you've had a great birthday!!

Nilsson News

Okay, so I wrote this lovely long post on my phone with pictures and everything and then when I tried to publish it, everything failed.  So, this is going to be a slightly less detailed version of my previously attempted post.
We have really been enjoying this fallish time of year.  We've gone to the pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins, carved said pumpkins, played in the leaves since we actually have leaves to play in for the first time ever!  Soup is part of our menu each week which I thoroughly enjoy, but some of the kids not so much.  It's a great time of year!
This past Monday, we went with the Harts on a little field trip to watch a falconer work with his bird.  She is still in training but we got to watch her swoop and catch her lunch.  Then we got to watch as she devoured it.  I don't know whether it was this last part that maybe made Addy a little woozy, but as we were walking back to the car, she collapsed, passed out.  I wish I could say I remained calm and collected but no, I pretty much freaked out.  Alex ran over and Addy came to but was still a bit delirious.  Alex carried her to the car and we gave her some food and water.  It took her awhile to get back to normal and she still doesn't recall what happened.  Crazy.
Yesterday, we went to a neighborhood Halloween party.  I ended up running into an old LD's friend that I haven't seen for ten years.  She didn't recognize me at all with my hair cut and once she realized who I was, asked where all my hair was.  It was fun visiting and catching up.
Our goal for this week is to begin work on finishing our basement.  We got all our stuff cleared out of it, measured the walls and made a supplies list.  We opted not to go forward with the outrageous $45,000 quote that a contractor gave us.  We may not be able to do it quite as timely as someone who knows what they are doing but we know we can do it for a fraction of the price.  If anyone is looking for something to do, feel free to come and join in on the fun!
Happy Fall!

Flake Fun

23 Oct 2016 - It has been quite a week in the Flake household.  Scott, his director and another coworker spent 2 days in Phoenix meeting with auditors.  I spent my week in meetings and working on an active shooter compilation video.  On Friday and Saturday we held to drive through flu shot clinics at local fire stations.  So, we are both exhausted from work.

The weather has been very warm recently which is strange for October.  It did freeze a couple of nights so all of our tomato plants died, except for the one that Scott hung on our back porch.  The flowers are still in bloom though and look beautiful.  The basil, carrots and onions in the greenhouse are doing really well.

Sorry to hear about Emerson's recent mishap and hope he is recovering.  The picture looked like he would have a pretty nice black eye.  Glad to hear that Thomas' test was helpful.  Now he just has to suffer until December!  Hope that everything goes well with the Hart move.  Wish we could be there to help but we are excited to see pictures and hopefully the real thing in the not too distant future.

Last Friday we cut another load of firewood so we should be good for the winter.  Now we just have to split that last load and we'll be done with that.

As for the house, it is coming along.  We spent quite a bit of time there yesterday and got the texturing done.  Scott also put down the backer board in the mud room so it is almost ready to tile.  Now the big projects will be painting and tiling...

The mud room progress...

The laundry room progress

Quiet in Hyde Park

I really never planned for this stage of life. As a young person I looked forward to going to college, getting married and having a family. The end. I never really thought of life beyond that. So, when I am home alone during the day, especially on the weekends, it's a bit disconcerting. I'm learning some new things about how to feel needed or useful at this time in my life. It's not bad, just different. I'm sure I'll get a handle on it one of these days.

I went with Dad to the area conference we had this morning. It originated in the Spectrum, but only certain stakes were invited there. The rest of us had to watch the broadcast at various meeting locations. It was interesting to me that our area goes from Preston and Malad to Layton, east to Morgan and west along the Great Salt Lake and includes 119 stakes! Elder Stevenson spoke, as well as Elder Wilson who was at Dad's last stake conference, Sister Jones (Primary General President) and Elder Christensen of the presidency of the Seventy. It was a wonderful, spirit-filled meeting with many take home messages for me to implement in my life.

Emma survived taking the ACT again. She didn't enjoy it any more the second time, but hopes she did a little better on it. I drove with Sister Bennett to Provo to watch the marching band compete at BYU. I took a few minutes to go to Springville to hang out with my favorite family down there. It was delightful, as always! What a great, happy crew! Thomas had a CT scan and will be having surgery on his sinuses during Christmas break. Nick can empathize with him, but says he will feel like a new person when it's all healed. Emerson seems to be healing from his run in with the fireplace. Wesley seemed to enjoy going to the pumpkin walk yesterday. He's on the verge of being introduced to real food. Lauren hopes that feeding him a little more bulk before bed may help him sleep a bit longer at a time. Let's all pray that it works!

Just a thought from our conference today: Sister Jones spoke about raising sin-resistant children. She said that one of the most important ways to accomplish that is to teach them about making and keeping covenants or promises. She said that children are great imitators and that we need to give them something great to imitate! We need to keep our promises so that they can follow that example. She told about a young boy who was in a habit of teasing his younger sister. He promised to not tease her for one full day. That night he reported that he had succeeded in his keeping his promise. Then he did it for another day. When his dad asked how he was able to keep his promise, he said, "I kept my promise because I said I would." Sister Jones said that there is great power in keeping promises. She reminded us that the Savior kept His promise to provide the atonement, because He said He would. It was very profound for me.

Have a great week, one and all! Some of our family will head to California this week (Emma) and some to Idaho (Joe's family). Safe travels to all! And happy moving to the Hart family (if it really happens :)

More From Hyde Park

Well, there's certainly not anything as interesting or exciting to report from our neck of the woods - thankfully! The Nilsson report this morning is that Emerson is doing fine and was quite intrigued by all that went on at the hospital. He said he didn't even feel a thing! Thankfully, again!

We are loving the beautiful fall leaves, even those that have fallen all over our yard. That is going to be my exercise effort for the next many weeks, I'm sure - raking all those leaves off the grass and getting them into the compost...

I've been trying to become better friends with Wesley lately so that he won't have such a hard time when his mom is occupied for a few moments. The Mannings were generous and invited us to dinner one night. Then they went to the temple with the intent to do baptisms. I finished the dishes before Wesley began to miss his mom and dad, which was about 10 minutes after they left. Nothing I did calmed him, so I wrapped him in a blanket and went outside. I was surprised to realize it was sprinkling, but Wesley didn't care about the rain or anything else. He just wanted his mom and dad, who actually pulled into the parking lot not long after we went outside. The baptistry was too full, so they came home - much to Wesley's relief and delight. We are going to have to keep working at it, but one of these days he's going to like me! He rolls over now, and gets up on his hands like he might think about crawling soon. He's a strong little guy!

Emma is nearly finished with band. I went to their competition in Centerville last week (at Nick's alma mater, Davis High School) with Sister Bennett. They did well and we enjoyed cheering and waving our flags! Only one more performance before heading to Southern Utah and on to California. Then she'll be done with marching band, for good. She has so much else going on that it will be good to get one big time-consumer out of the way, though I know she will miss it when all is said and done.

Dad had two ward conferences yesterday, which went well. After speaking in Sacrament Meeting in our ward, I attended those conferences with him. There are a lot of great young adults there, but many with such heavy burdens and difficulties. Dad is learning much, even things he never, ever wanted to learn! I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.

Thomas is having a CT scan on his face today. Dr. Blotter is trying to discover why he is having such severe sinus issues so constantly. The medications seem to be helping a bit, but he wants to see if there is some kind of structural reason for the problem. It will be nice to get to the bottom of it!

Most all else is the same. Here is a great quote, even a possible motto for life, that Kate printed in the Banner: "If it isn't good, don't think it. If it isn't true, don't say it. If it isn't right, don't do it." (Carlos Asay) Easy to remember, easy to live by. Have a great week, you great family, you!

Nilsso News...again

After posting earlier, we had quite the mishap. Emerson was being a cowboy and riding on the back of Addy, when somehow he flew off and face planted against our sharp, stone hearth. Blood immediately started to flow down the side of his face and it was mayhem for a moment.  It was an impressive inch long gash that ran diagonal through his eyebrow. Our neighbor came over and assessed the situation and recommended stitches. We have never had to take anyone in to have stitches. It was past 9 on a Sunday so the urgent care was closed so Garrett took him to the ER.  This was quite an experience and I'm sure the staff thought we were neglectful when Garrett answered all their questions stating that Emerson did not have immunizations, he has never been in a hospital, in fact he wasn't even born in one! Emerson was a good sport and was thrilled when they let him take home the tools they used to stitch him up with.  Our fireplace will now be getting a facelift.

Nilsson News

We do have some actual news for this week!  We went to Brigham City for our 20 week ultrasound appointment.  All is looking good and there appears to be one baby and it looks like it's another sister!  We are pretty good at the alternating thing.  Addy is very excited and Emerson I think is pretending to be disappointed.  Eliza is always excited about babies and Henry hasn't a clue.  I wonder if he is curious as to why I don't have much lap room left.
The farm life is going well. Yesterday, Garrett had the privilege of loading and unloading 1 1/2 tons of hay.  I was actually quite jealous but I guess I'll have to wait until next year to do it.  Our wonderful next door neighbor who is in his 70's came over to help unload all the hay.  He picked up the first bale and said "This is nothing!"  (He had previously unloaded some bales for us that were 100 lbs each and these were around 50).  Garrett, who had just loaded all these bales onto the trailer by himself leaned over and said, "Actually, they are really heavy!"  He is getting quite an introduction to farm life!  The cuteness factor of the donkeys makes up for all the work.  We are eyeing a mini cart on craigslist because it would be a blast to train the donks to pull.
Canning season has come to a close I think, thanks to mom for finishing my last batch of spaghetti sauce.  It was a good harvest year and we are now enjoying some beautiful fall weather.  Yesterday we went to the farmer's market for the final time this season.  We splurged and bought some crepes, which were absolutely incredible!  Here is a variation for the next time you make crepes:
feta cheese
sundried tomatoes
spinach leaves
pesto sauce
You will not be disappointed!

.....And Loving It.

This is ya'lls little sister.  I haven't posted for awhile mostly because my life is exactly the same as it has been for the past six months and because I don't have time to post.  School is tough, the teachers are crazy, homework is insanity, and band is trying to kill me, but it's a good time.
Speaking of band, this is my funny story of the past six months: we have an awesome ballad in our show.  A few days ago, Mr. Beach (bless his soul) switched my solo with someone else's, so they were playing mine, and I was playing theirs (so I guess it's a duet, not a solo).  Anyway, we had a few minutes to memorize a different part and play it at the competition the next day.  Not too stressful since you can just ear it and it's fine.  Well, Beach decided that he didn't like the range I was playing in, so he kindly told me that he was rewriting my part completely, and instead of going ninety beats a minute, we were going to make it more of a waltz at one twelve.  Good times.  #stressing.  So I got the part at band practice (again, a day before a competition), and I spent about twenty minutes memorizing this completely different part.  Once again, bless his soul.  I was feeling pretty good about it, because I didn't have long and I memorized it and played it fairly well.  I was watching the staffs faces so I could see what their reaction was... If they liked it, what I'd need to change etc.  Not to toot my own horn (pun intended), but I played it pretty much perfectly and I was feeling pretty great about the smiles on the staffs faces.  Ms. Nelson was grinning ear to ear when she called up to Mr. Beach on the tower "Randall! Nice job writing that solo! It totally changes the whole feel!" ............well, yes, indeed, good job Randall.  Thank you for writing such a great solo.
Long story short, I felt a bit like Eliza Dolittle - Ms Nelson "Tonight old man you did it, you did it, you did it"... Mr Beach "but wait, but wait, give credit where it's due.  Most of the credit goes to you." It was pretty funny.  I was standing on the solo box, laughing to myself because nobody else noticed.  To be fair, they did compliment me the next day.

Flake Fun

12 Oct 2016 - Last week was fairly normal.  We had to cover the tomatoes a few times due to forecasts of frost (which were accurate).  Despite our tender, loving care, I think the tomatoes are about done.  We might get another small batch but not much more than that.  Our carrots are huge (about 1 pound each) and our potatoes are still doing very well.

We have been working hard on the house and are making progress.  All of the taping is done so now we need to sand and texture the new walls.  I left the camera at the house though so pictures will have to wait until next time.

We were sad that we couldn't make it to Jack's baptism but we know that it was a wonderful experience for everyone that was able to attend.  Nephews getting baptized makes me feel old!

The primary presidency was released on Sunday which was bittersweet.  We'll see what the next adventure is!

Love you all!

Hyde Park in Full Speed

October came in like a bullet train and just keeps going!  We had a little reprieve during Conference, but were off at high speed again the next morning.  There's nothing like General Conference for a healthy shot in the arm spiritually!  It's easy to believe that things are going to be okay if we believe in the Savior and follow the prophets after listening to the brethren.  I was very inspired and comforted.

It was delightful to have Harts and Nilssons come last week so the gals could spend time together crafting at our Relief Society activity.  Lauren and Emma came, too, which made it doubly fun!  The 2nd ward ladies couldn't get enough of darling Wesley!  He was definitely a central attraction.  The Idahoans didn't stay long, but we sure enjoyed them while it lasted.

One sad experience we had this week was when Lauren was teaching her first piano lesson since she quit when Wesley was born.  She came before the lesson to get things ready, then I took Wesley during the first lesson.  He did not like it, not one little bit.  He fussed, then cried, then sobbed, then threw up, then screamed - through the entire first lesson!  I tried going outside, no change. I tried bouncing, rocking, singing, talking - all to no avail.  Emma took him downstairs to look at books.  No good.  It was very, very sad.  Lauren rescued the traumatized little guy after the first lesson and, after calming down, he played happily on the floor by the piano during the second lesson.  We hope it gets better in coming weeks...

The highlight of the week for me was Jack's baptism.  He's a wonderful boy and very ready to be a member of the church and make covenants.  Alex conducted the stake baptism and did a great job of rolling with all of the necessary last minute changes.  There was a good spirit and lots of support from family and friends.

Dad wasn't able to attend the baptism because he was performing a wedding in Salt Lake at the same time.  This was a friend of Alex and Elise who got married up the canyon by Snowbird.  It was a beautiful setting, but Dad said there's a reason we get married at the temple!  Just as he was about to start the ceremony, a huge, noisy helicopter started flying overhead.  It was delivering cement from a nearby parking lot up to a project on the top of the mountain.  It took about 7 minutes from the bottom to the top and back and it could be heard the whole time.  So, not much counsel or commentary was given.  Thankfully, just as they started the most important part of the ceremony, the helicopter landed and turned off the motor, which made it not quite so noisy for the last couple of paragraphs.

Emma is consumed with marching band right now.  They started their competition season and have been a bit disappointed so far.  But they have a good show and the soloist (Emma B.) is always amazing!  They have one or two shows each week for the rest of the month and then head to California.  They will be performing in Disneyland on Halloween!  She's trying to keep up with classes and homework, and study for the ACT, too!

I also attended a birth in Star Valley to help the midwife who broke her arm.  Just before arriving in Afton, I encountered a blizzard and couldn't see a foot in front of the car!  Crazy!  I was glad for the traffic going to the temple open house so I had tail lights to follow.  It was a long, all night birth, but I got a couple of hours' sleep before heading home the next day - in beautiful weather.

Flake Fun

2 October 2016 - First of all, happy birthday to Lauren.  Second of all, congratulations to the Hart family on their new purchase. Thirdly, happy October to everyone!

This weekend has been exhausting but very productive with a couple of funny/happy stories mixed in.

As for the week, it was pretty typical.  We held 7 active shooter trainings (which I will be turning into a video) and we have 6 more this coming week.  Our office has started to do quarterly community trainings and this was the first of those trainings. It is being taught by local law enforcement officers to talk about what happens when they respond and what can the public expect.  It has been a very informative and interesting training.  I think our next one will be on suspicious packages. Scott is keeping very busy at work as well trying to figure out everyone's budgets.  His department just got reorganized and now there are only 3 of them in the department.

Scott had Friday off so we were able to spend quite a bit of time at the house getting things done.  On Friday we decided to divide and conquer so, while he started on the house, I headed to Show Low for some supplies that we needed.  Long story short I ended up locking the keys in the car.  Luckily I was at Home Depot and was able to borrow some supplies.  I tied a slip knot in the cord of my jacket and slipped it into the cracked open window.  Then I slid a paint stick in the window and secured the cord on the lock and pulled.  I highly recommend that if you ever feel the need to lock your keys in your car that you crack the window and make sure you are at Home Depot!

This is the toad that we found.

As you can see we got some drywall done which means that all of the major plumbing and electrical are finished!  Now we just have to texture, paint, level, tile and change all of the outlets and switches, along with some light fixtures and we'll be nearly done!!!!

Hyde Park Happiness

Well, I had intended to post on the blog last week, but ended up at an all day, into the night, birth. I got home at 1:30 a.m. and got up early to get breakfast ready before Emma left for school, which left me sleep deprived for a few days, so I forgot to get on the blog.

Anyway, we've had a couple of good weeks.  I've canned lots of spaghetti sauce and some tomato soup - thanks to Scott's Aunt Karen for the delicious recipe!  I'm still hoping for enough tomatoes to make a batch or two of salsa, but we'll see how they hold out.  The rain has been wonderful and we're glad the tornadoes didn't come this far north!  Hopefully it will dry out enough this week for us to dig up all the potatoes we have left in the garden.

Emma attended the homecoming dance last night and had a lovely time.  She went with a very nice boy who asked her to Junior Prom last year after she'd been asked by someone else, so she promised him another dance date and finally made good on it!  They had a ping pong day date the day before, which was a lot of fun.  She has started the marching band competition season and have a very fun show this year.  I hope some of you get to see them march.  It's weird to think it's her last year.

Lauren has come a time or two to help with the canning.  It's nice for us to keep each other company while everyone else is gone.  It's especially nice to play with baby Wesley, who is learning to roll over, spit, play with toys and laugh.  He's so cute and fun to have close by.  I'm glad to get to stay with him while Lauren goes to the temple now and then.

Dad and I are officially a year older now.  Surprising how birthdays are not very important when you get our age, except that we are now being bombarded with invitations to learn about social security, hearing aids, AARP, funeral plans, and assisted living centers.  We're not really interested in those things yet, so we'd rather not have any more birthdays for a while :)  We are planning to serve a mission or two before investing in those other things...

We are delighted with happy news from Idaho and hope to get up there soon to see all of the new acquirements!  Hope all is well with our wonderful family in all different places!  We can't wait for General Conference next weekend!!!!

Flake Fun

25 September 2016 - Sorry we didn't write late week.  It was fair week and both of us were basically comatose by the time the week was over!  There is A LOT of behind the scenes things at the fair that I never knew about.

This week was a fairly blustery one. (No tornadoes though!)  I spent the first half of the week in Phoenix at a couple of conferences with my coworkers.  The second one was more interesting to me than the first one.  One of the speakers was talking about getting through to people in messaging.  He went through each generation and talked about why they do what they do. For example: the baby boomers showed affection by working to provide.  Their children, generation X show their love by experiences and time. Baby boomers are annoyed that Gen X won't stay late and be "dedicated to the job" but would rather go to soccer practice or football practice with their children.  Very interesting.  That might be something for Garrett to look into when thinking about his young men and their technology.  Speaking of generations, do you know what they are considering calling the new generation?  The snowflake generation because they are all so delicate and unique!

I canned a batch and a half of tomatoes on Friday to add to the batch we did last week. Scott split and I stacked nearly 2 cords of wood on Friday night (until about 11:00PM) which was exhausting but nice to have checked off the to do list.

The house is coming along.  We made our last big purchase for the house (tile and accoutrements) and we'll hopefully be back to normal enough schedule wise to really get on the stick.

Last week's Primary funny:

I was sitting with the sunbeam class until their teacher arrived.

Sunbeam one: My birthday is in 2 minutes
Sunbeam two: (with a VERY concerned look on his face)  I don't have a birthday...

Today was the last day for our junior primary chorister.  Their family moved across town to another ward.  She was telling the kids that she wasn't going to be in the ward but they were still in town so we'd still see them at school.

Sunbeam one (same one from last week):  Um, I'm too young for school so I won't see her.

Hope that everyone has a great week!
