Backyard Pets

Dad's been chasing wildlife today! Thought we'd better get him to put this photo on today since he won't be home much tomorrow.

You'll notice that it's January 31st and there's no snow on the ground here. There hasn't been any snow for a long time. We hope we get some soon....

Nilsson News

I actually did not forget about posting on Sunday but I wanted to have a few pictures to post.  My only camera is Garrett's phone, so I have to wait until he is around before I can use it.  This week has been good.  Addy had her piano recital and did an excellent, flawless job.  She really has an amazing talent and we are hoping to have her start lessons with my friend, Anarie, in the summer or fall.  For Emerson's little playgroup, we went on a tour of a vet clinic that specializes in birds and exotics.  They are the vets who take care of the aviary in Salt Lake, Lagoon, and the Ogden Nature Center.  They told us the most unique animals they have treated have been monkeys and a rare type of lizard.  Eliza's favorite part was seeing the pet parrot and green tree python that were in the lobby.  Eliza is talking like crazy (just ask mom, dad or Emma)!  She discovered her new favorite toy at Grandma's house is the "baby bear" which just so happens to be the honey bear full of honey.  She likes to carry it around cradled in her arms saying, "baby beaw, baby beaw, baby beaw."  This week I completed my projects I had going in the piano room.  I purchased some throw pillows, a new clock, gave the lamps a makeover and built a side table.  The side table was definitely a new experience for me but for now it will serve its purpose.  Sorry that the pictures are a little dark.  What projects have you all been up to?

Black and Blue in Hyde Park

I am a bruised and battered specimen lately. I feel something like a pincushion must feel. Both of my antecubital fossas (area where your arm bends and blood is drawn from) are bruised, both of my ring and middle fingers are very tender, and the entire back of my left hand is purple. The phlebotomy class is brutal! No one ever has a problem finding my veins, but for some reason when they take the needle out of my arm or hand, something happens and I am left with a hematoma (fancy word for bruise). Still, I'd rather be poked than poke other people - although I've had better luck with not bruising anyone else. Only 6 more weeks of torture...

Two babies were born this weekend one boy, one girl - one Friday night, one Saturday morning. All went well. I got to catch both and have now completed all of the required numbers for my national certification. There are other requirements, too, but documentation for that part is finished. I just have to fill out all of the forms, pass off a few more skills, finish my classes, and take the national exam. Hope to complete it all by the end of the year.

Emma went to a stake dance this weekend, which she greatly enjoyed. It's always nice to go with a big group who take dance classes together and like to practice. She was tickled pink when Thomas took her and Lauren on a date Friday night to play racquetball, get a shake, and home to watch a movie. Lauren cut out on them for the movie and took off with Nick, but they forgave her.

The Nilsson's came up on Monday for the "holiday." They went to Willow Park then came here so we could watch the children while Ruth and Garrett went on a lunch date. We went on a walk and had a fun time reading some books and playing.

The highlight of the week was today. Elder Quentin Cook was in Logan to speak at the Spectrum and the YSA Stake Presidents (and wives) were invited to dinner at the institute with him. After eating, he spoke for a few minutes and answered a few questions before going to the Spectrum. Thomas and Emma met us there and we were treated to a wonderful talk with pertinent counsel.

So, what would you ask an apostle if you had the chance? Did you know that Elder Cook was from Logan? (I guess you did if you listened in Conference...) Did you know that he lived in the 18th ward and attended church in the building close to the temple? Did you know that was the same ward and building we attended when we came back from Kansas? That was the same church that Lauren was blessed in and the same ward where Dad was Young Men's president for a short time before we moved to Hyde Park. Now you know what you have in common with Elder Cook!

Flake Fun

25 January 2015 - This week has been a quick one.  Neither of us had to go to work on Monday because of the holiday so we spent the day working on the house and purchasing more supplies.  We now own a miter saw.  Home Depot employees know us by name now...kind of sad.  But, at the same time, it is kind of a rush to be popular like that.

We got a smattering of snow and the weather has been really chilly but it is supposed to warm up and be in the 50's this week.  We were able to get a load of wood for our new wood stove which was nice.

I can't really think of anything noteworthy that happened this week.  We are just getting organized and trying to finish up the house.  I took the camera to get some pictures of the house the other day but there is such a mess right now that it looks worse than before.  Hopefully we'll get pictures of progress taken soon!

Hart Happenings January 12-18, 2015

I think there are bunches of good things I take for granted in my life.  This week brought one to my attention.  I am really used to having my body be able to keep up with all the things I want to accomplish in a day, and this week, that wasn't the case.  Alex and I both had a mini-relapse of the flu.  You know, the energy-sucking strain that leaves you lethargic and cloudy.  Therefore, this week passed in a rather hazy, slow-motion blur.
We did meet some new sister missionaries when we took them dinner at the Visitor's Center.  Our temple is on schedule for some major remodeling and starting in March will be closed for 18 months! So we are trying to get to the temple as often as possible, which hasn't been very often for the aforementioned reasons.  Anyway......
Alex decided it was time to take the boys rock climbing, which we did on Thursday.  It was a riot!  The boys loved it.  Peter pretended to be Spider Man while we hauled him up and down on the ropes. I always get so nervous when I go (the whole fear of heights thing) but the boys were fearless.  They were puzzled the next day thought when their arms and chests hurt.  It was such a success that we are going to make it a regular activity.
Alex and I accepted a year long reading challenge at the library.  The goal is 52 books in 52 weeks.  There are different categories like: A Book over 500 pages, a book that was published the year you were born, a book you started but never finished, a book you were supposed to read in school but never did, a book by an author whose initials are the same as yours, etc.....If we pull it off we get a hoodie that says Book Nerd on it, but I'm going to petition that they change it to Bibliophile, instead.  Alex has jumped in full force and finished 2 books each in one day!  Unprecedented!
Speaking of books, I enjoyed meeting with my book club on Saturday night.  We discussed Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, which I must highly recommend to anyone who hasn't read it and would like some thought provoking, but very entertaining and accessible reading material.  SO GOOD! This was my second time through it and I found it just as interesting as the first go round.
Ian started up his singing class again this week and Jack is counting down the days for his art class to start.
Alex and I were rejuvenated at church yesterday and can't wait to go forward and actually accomplish something this week!

I remembered!

There are few times when I remember to do something especially when suffering from loss of brain cells because of pregnancy, but this time it was different!  I remembered to post something on time!  This weekend has been very productive.  We had our bishopric dinner and it was fun and successful.  It was a light picnic type meal which had us dreaming of summer time.  Saturday we finished rearranging the kids rooms.  We now have a place to put baby clothes and supplies and a place to put Eliza when she decides she is done sleeping in our bed (will that ever happen?).  I also gave our lamps in the piano room a makeover and they look SO much better.  I have a before picture but not an after one yet.  We just uploaded pictures from Garrett's phone so enjoy some random and somewhat old pics.

Reflections

A tragic thing happened this week in Hyde Park. Some of you know about it already. I've been reflecting on it quite a bit the past few days. Maybe you know Max and Jody Lamb. They were involved with the Special Needs Seminary class at Sky View for a while. They have two children and several grandchildren who live in Hyde Park, as well. The Lambs have been married for over 62 years. Anyway, Brother Lamb was ill and they were going to the pharmacy to pick up some medication for him. He didn't know his wife was behind the car and he ran over her. She didn't survive. It has been a very sad week.
I just keep thinking how quickly things happen that change our lives. I've also been thinking how vital it is for us to be careful about what we say and do so that we don't have regrets when we have these devastating experiences. I don't need to elaborate. You know what I'm talking about.
Please pray for Brother Lamb, who has been in the hospital with pneumonia, and his family. It is a very sad, hard time for them.

News From Hyde Park

It was great fun to have Ruth and the children here for a little while this week. They came to have some space to move around in while their newly cleaned carpets dried - and they got stranded because of a snow storm! We were glad to keep them overnight.
The very big news, the biggest news ever, from us is that Emma passed her driving test!!!!! I'm sure you've all heard about that already because she was very excited about it. She was plenty worried for an entire week before it happened. She fussed and stewed and practiced driving and fasted and asked Dad for a blessing. Then it finally happened and went flawlessly! The only thing she forgot was to check her blindspot on one maneuver, which she said she did check and he just didn't see it. So she's officially a good driver. She really is very capable. Now we just have to keep her from getting overconfident and cocky! All she has to do is practice driving, turn 16, then go to the DMV and show them her paper and she can get a license. Lauren and Nick came over that night and played games with her to celebrate. It's quite a relief to have that behind us :)
Thomas is up to his eyebrows in anatomy - Andy Anderson's class. He's about decided this was the wrong semester to take that class. It's purported to be the very hardest class on USU campus. He's considering dropping the class and taking it another semester when he has more time to study. He also has biology, nutrition, and a physical education class, so he's busy. We usually see him for a few minutes in the morning, then not again until the next morning.
Lauren is teaching, studying, reading, practicing - every day, all day. No changes there! She hangs out with Nick who is also teaching, studying, reading, practicing - every day, all day. We love it when she comes on Wednesdays to teach here because we get to have dinner with her and catch up on her life - the teaching, studying, reading and practicing...
Dad took the plunge and put new tires on the truck this week. Now, for those who think they want a truck, remember how costly it is to put on new tires. We got good tires, but not top of the line. Still were about $800 poorer by the time they were on - but it's a quiet ride!
I'm well into my classes (actually over my head in classes). The hardest one is the phlebotomy class. I have a lecture every Tuesday night, then go home and re-study everything because I didn't understand it the first time. Then we have a clinic day every Thursday where I have to get my blood drawn 4 times - twice in each arm, along with 8 finger pokes for capillary blood draws (less blood, but more painful!). I'm beginning to feel like a pin cushion. The worst is that I have to poke other people that many times, too. Thank goodness it's only a 10 week class!
We took a walk in the lovely weather yesterday and came home to a herd of deer in our front yard. They meandered to the back yard when we walked up the driveway. When we went into the back for a better look, we saw two bucks and eight does. They bounded into the neighbors' yard and turned around to look at us and wait for us to go back in the house so they could return to eating our new sod! I guess it's pretty tasty stuff.

Flake Fun

18 January 2015 - This past week has been a long one.  There has been a bit of craziness with Jenn at work since her boss was appointed as Deputy Director of the Health Department.  Details are still being worked out and hopefully it will be a good thing.   Scott has reports coming out of his ears and is making his way through them.

But, on to other topics:  The sunset house is coming along well.  We worked on the house all day yesterday and were able to get a couple of big projects done.  Scott re-wired the kitchen so that the kitchen light can now be turned on from the dining room.  The old kitchen floor has been removed.  There are new light fixtures in the bedrooms.  The outlets and light switches are being changed for new ones.  Since neither of us have to work tomorrow we are hoping to get a lot more done.

For those of you who have interest and don't know, the scouting program is undergoing some changes and new stuff is coming down the pipeline.  I am trying to figure out how to get all of those changes to my leaders.  Luckily it won't happen until June so I have a few months to get everyone on the same page.

I think that is about it.  We have not gotten any recent pics of the house but we'll take some and upload them soon.

The slow poke

Well, I guess we win the award for being the slowest at getting a post up.  We are still trying to fight off this nasty flu that is going around.  Addy and Emerson had the stomach flu for a couple days and Eliza and I are still trying to fight off this respiratory gunk.  Garrett is healthy and well and we hope it stays that way!  We had our carpets cleaned and went up to Hyde Park to hang out while they dried.  We ended up getting snowed in and spending the night, which was not really part of the plan but it was fun.  We are trying to get the house cleaned and organized before the new little addition decides to arrive.  I hope that next time we can be a little more prompt on writing, but Sundays are about the busiest day of the week for us.

Flake Fun

12 January 2015 -  Not much happened of note this week because both of us were under the weather.  On Saturday we installed our new wood burning stove which is really cute.  About 6-8 weeks ago our little pellet stove decided that it was tired and didn't want to function.  Do not fear, we have not been freezing because Scott hardwired it but that meant that it only worked on "high".  So now I am learning about building fires that will last all night...never a dull moment!

For those of you who have heard the crazy carpet fiasco story from the beginning of December, we finally got that put to rest.  We were able to return the "leftover" carpet and pad and get quite a good refund on it so we were pleased.  On Saturday we went "Sunset Shopping" (our new house is located on Sunset Circle) and bought a new laminate wood floor, a tub surround for the spare bath, closet doors, baseboard, light fixtures, new hardware for the kitchen and other misc. stuff.  Now that we have the supplies, we're hoping to see progress.

Scott was released as a primary teacher so he is now back in the Elders quorum.  They have started church basketball up.  There was a game last week against the single's branch...brutal game.  Scott is the youngest person on the team I think.  The single branch was dunking and running circles around the old guys (who had to stop to adjust their ankle braces and knee braces...just kidding....kind of).  They fought hard but ended up losing, but the bright side is that no one had a heart attack or some other catastrophe!

Well I think that is about it for this week!  I love the idea of weekly postings! Can't wait to hear about the adventures you are all having!!!

Hart Happenings: January 5-11, 2015

Well, this week was packed with good times.  I spent a lot of time organizing cupboards, the office, the boys/ room, and taming the laundry room.  It seems to have a mind of its own.  We were home all this week except a quick day trip down and back to Salt Lake to pick up Alex's backpack with computer, iPad, and various, assorted necessities.  At which time we visited Ikea and got some containers for Project Organization.  Peter became very attached to some potties that we saw in the children's section and wouldn't let go of one, so we also came away with that as well.  Ian is convinced Ikea is the very best place to "Heely".
Back at home, the boys spent a lot of time playing with their Legos.  They make some pretty great stuff.  It's fun to watch them all go at it together.
The boys and I visited the local Humanitarian Center and were blown away by the amount of stuff going on there.  We went on a tour of the facility and can't wait to go back and actually do something!
Ian liked seeing the newborn kits they assembled and Jack thought the crocheted toys were really cute.  Peter was excited to touch everything!
On Friday, Alex went skiing at Big Sky in Montana, which is the largest ski resort in the United States.  Our good family friend invited him but by the end I was afraid they weren't going to be friends any longer.  Being the adventurous soul he is, Alex suggested that they ride the lift up to a certain part of the mountain and ski from there.  Christopher had his doubts, but Alex can be convincing so up they went.  In the retelling, Alex told me when they got to the top he looked down and was "terrified".  So they just sat there not knowing what to do.  Eventually, Christopher took off.  Alex watched and saw his friend fall and keep falling.  When he didn't stop falling Alex finally took off in pursuit.  Christopher fell between 300-500 yards and the two of them spent about and hour locating gear and trying to fix stuff that had gotten messed up.  Come to find out, the hill that Alex had selected was a Black Diamond which is about as difficult as they come.  Just straight down.  Glad I wasn't there to see it!  I stayed blissfully unaware through the whole thing.  I don't know if Alex will ever be invited again.  Maybe it's for the best!
Alex and I enjoyed a lovely hike up the Cress Creek trail on Saturday.  Ian took part in a photo shoot for the Idaho Falls magazine who is publishing an article about his gardening group. And Jack beat Alex at checkers.
Anyway, we're off to a good start this year.  Lots of things to look forward to, many goals we're going to accomplish, and just a good feeling in the air.  Don't you think?

Happy New Year from Springville!

Nothing particularly out of the ordinary around the Belliston household lately.  Jake is rolling around a lot and both he and Joy got a couple teeth and enjoy using them!  Grace and Grant went tubing for the first time and loved it.  We are hoping for more snow this week.

Here is a link to an arrangement of "Nearer my God to Thee" by vocal point and the BYU Mens Chorus.  It gave us chills when we watched it.  Another win by BYU in my opinion, and one more reason for Thomas to come down south and audition :)  Make sure to turn it up!

Quotes of the week:  "Kisses make me sick" Grant
"I'm so full of dance!"  Grace

New Year Thoughts

Well, they say the best way to accomplish something is to begin. So...
Elise suggested the challenge of posting to our family blog each Sunday. I don't know how long the challenge is for, but thought I should start!

Thanks for the fun Christmas time, everyone! We had a blast with all of you here. Favorite memories include: playing Telestrations, snow for Christmas!, children singing and playing together, an hilarious Nativity rendition by Scott and the children with Eliza stealing baby Jesus, holding babies who smile at us, visiting and eating and playing together! It never seems long enough, but we will take what we can get. Thanks for making it so wonderful!

I'm sorry to report that all of the families in our family have had sickness since returning home. I really hope you didn't get sick because you came here! Please find something/someone else to blame for it! We have been trying to help Lauren and Thomas feel better this weekend. Hopefully they will be up and well before long.

Other events of this first week of the new year include two births of baby boys. That's eight baby boys in a row for me! Only boys at the births I attended in November and December! Dad took all of the photos for Allison Fife's wedding. He was stressed about it, but did a wonderful job. He's also been photographing wildlife in our backyard.Thomas went to St. George and Las Vegas with Victoria's family for a few days. Lauren played the piano at Bro. Jessop's house for the fine arts faculty. Emma went to some movies and ice skating, and gave Chester a bath! We took down our Christmas stuff and are trying to get back to a "normal" schedule.

I have waited a week to post this, but even with all the talk of photo taking, I couldn't find anyone to help me attach a photo to this post, so you'll just have to imagine the lovely photos Dad took! :) Maybe next time I can get someone to put a photo in for me...
