Manning Mredictions

Nick came up with that great title! We sure had a great time with everyone over Christmas! I hope nobody gets pneumonia however. The highlight for us was talking to Emma and visiting with such delightful people. Wesley is doing much better and was bouncing off the wall all day so things are looking up. We love you all!

Predictions:

Lauren: The parents will get a mission call, Wesley will be potty trained, Ruth will run a marathon, Harts will start another business in lawn maintenance, Thomas will become a motivational speaker, A big change in how we do missionary work, 10 New Temples, Undercover missionaries in Israel.

Nick: Peter and Henry will have a falling out but will make restitution within a day, Robin will deliver triplets (maybe in Arizona), Jenn and Scott will have amazing sleeper babies, Joe will get hired to do post production work for FBI training videos, Harts will figure out a way to use their UFO drones to blow leaves off their lawn, Ruth will singlehandedly build the Hart's next rental property in a weekend, Emma will baptize an entire family, President Nelson will talk about ministering successes in April General Conference, T & T will costar in the next big reality TV show entitled "Wacky-Six," A temple in mainland China, every family has pneumonia in January, Jim wins ping pong tournament, President Nelson issues challenge in Priesthood session having to do with temple work or ministering or reading The Book of Mormon, Lauren masters canning and finances and continues to be the Manning's saving grace, I will officially resign as presider of the home and surrender to Wesley's incessant orders.

Nilsson News

What a wonderful holiday!  It's always so fun to gather with you lovely people and I never get tired of it.  The food, the visits, music, sledding, playing, talking with Hermana Belliston, it was all so terrific!  We are looking forward to this week as getting ourselves put back together.  The kiddos are still on break from their classes and lessons so I'm in full project mode while not being pulled in a million different directions.  I got the playroom painted over the weekend and the best part of it was that it didn't cost anything and it only took a day and a half!  I love a good project like that.  Emerson's bedroom is next on the list for this week.  The hallway might follow, depending on my ambition.  I've also been looking at getting some "new" old doors with a little more charm for the bedrooms and bathroom.  The list is ever growing!
I was excited when I started thinking about New Years and realized that next New Years we'll get to open our Belliston Time Capsule from 20 years ago!  I hope you still have that mom!  Thinking about new year predictions, this is what we talked about over dinner tonight.

Garrett-  25 new temples announced.  Thomas will be the lead role in a play.  Belliston family will go on a church history trip (Nauvoo).  Nilssons will have 14 donkeys.

Ruth-  Changes in the temple system.  Grandma and Grandpa will serve a local mission.  Victoria will announce pregnancy.  Ian will be a lead role in a play.  All grown girls will go to Arizona for baby shower.  Nilssons will sell first donkey pair.  Joe and Lori will announce another baby.  Nilssons will make $500 in watermelon profit.  New missions will be opened.

Addy-  Harts will purchase 3 new rentals.  Grace will have a growth spurt.  T & T will move back to Utah.  Harts will get a dog.  Mannings will all stay healthy for two consecutive months.  All Nilsson's baby donkeys will survive.  Joe will find a recording studio rental space.  Eight year olds will do something important in the church other than being baptized.  (In 2020, Emma will get married.  Just looking ahead!)

Emerson-  T & T will move to Idaho Falls.

Eliza-  Harts will move to Italy.

We are looking forward to the new 2019 year!  Can't wait to see all of you again!

Previous Predictions

Well, I tried to find predictions from earlier this year, but I only found guesses about where Emma would go on her mission. The predictions for the previous year, 2017, have been lost (like a number of other things) during our recent move. I will keep looking to see what I can find. But, I did find this list - from 2016 - that I thought was interesting in light of recent happenings...

Lori:  New apostle and new prophet; Another set of twins in the family; Donald Trump gets rid of his toupee; Change in Joe's employment situation
Joe:  Dad take an international trip; Snow in June; Harts move to Utah; Scott has new job and another rental property; New technology to change the world the way Apple did
Elise:  Joe goes solo - leaves BYU; Ruth and Garrett will move
Alex:  New baby for Elise
Ian:  Jenn have a baby; New prophet
Jack:  Ian will lose his ipod
Ruth:  Emma finishes American School; Jack will lose another tooth; Garrett starts PhD at USU
Lauren: Thomas and Ruth will have a major life change; Harts will be expecting a new addition; Ruth and Garrett will be teaching Primary in a new ward; A new apostle; Nick will student teach seminary
Nick:  Mannings will have a baby boy; Jim will have to make room for another ward in his building; Sky View will beat American Fork in band; New prophet; Harts have a new house
Mom:  Dad will still work at USU and we will still live in Hyde Park
Dad: Brother Hales will pass away

Hart Happenings

What a lovely holiday!  It was so good to see everyone and visit with you.  The boys always have so much fun playing with cousins and Alex and I have a blast watching them play.  Sledding was such a hit!  We should totally do it again before the snow melts!  I've been playing the music from Lauren, which we all love!  Thanks for sharing your talent!
We were glad to be able to see both sides of the family this year.  Alex had siblings from out of town come to stay over the holiday and we enjoyed good time with them too.  Yesterday we grabbed some tire tubes from the Army Surplus store and Alex dragged the kids behind the van.  They loved it, but I was too nervous to watch much.
I've been busy getting everything ready for Primary 2019.  It's hard to keep up with all the changes but we are doing our best.  We have a great ward who is all in and on board with what Pres. Nelson has laid out, so that makes my job easy, but we just want to make sure we are on top of it all!
Alex is preparing to get 7 new deacons next week and is trying to meet with all of them before Sunday and get them ready for their new assignments.
The boys are ready to get back into their routine, I think.  They've been looking at the classes that will be available for their Compass group, practicing for soccer to get going again, and getting after me to open up our chapter books again and start reading.  Speaking of books, they LOVED the ones they picked out with Grandma and Grandpa.  It is a wonderful tradition and they have been using them every day.  Here is a riddle from Ian's: "A man and his dog are standing on opposites sides of a wide river.  The man calls the dog and the dog immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat.  How is this possible?"  Let us know what you think!
  Our predictions for 2019:
-Jenn will have twins! (all of us)
-Thomas is going to become famous (Jack)
-Lauren and Nick will make another album (Ian)
-Jenn will feel better (Peter)
-Emma will convert 5 people (Jack)
-Joe and Lori get a new car (Ian)
-Thomas and Victoria will move (Alex)
-Grandpa and Grandma will have a mission call (Alex and Elise)
-Grandpa will go to the quorum of the 70 (Jack)
-Emma will get back from her mission (Peter)
-Victoria will be pregnant (Jack)
-Ruth will grow a 70 pound watermelon (Ian)
-major change in the temple infrastructure of the church announced (Alex and Elise)
-5 more major announcements from the 1st presidency (Jack)
-dad will get a truck (Peter)

Smithfield Scoop

Well, it's awfully quiet around here since everyone left! Our tree is down, as well as the other decorations. The beds are changed and towels are washed and floors are vacuumed and toys are organized. Now what? If anyone is planning a fun New Year's party, count us in!

We enjoyed our time with the family IMMENSELY during Christmas. Having Jenn and Scott here before and after everyone else was a bonus. Talking with Emma was the highlight! Attending the birth on Christmas morning was sweet (especially because it was all said and done before the festivities began and I didn't have to miss anything besides a night of sleep). Everything was especially wonderful this year for some reason - the Cousins Christmas Concert, the music, the visiting, the meals, the ping pong.... It all just felt so real and so good after months of feeling displaced. I can't say I feel extremely settled in our new home yet, but when we were all together, it felt like home. Hard to articulate, but being together had that familiar feel that I have missed for a long, long time. Thank you for making that possible! We are so very grateful you came. What a blessing you all are!

We missed Lori and Hope terribly on Christmas Day, but glad little Hopie is feeling a bit better. We were sad when Wesley had to go to the emergency room and was told he had pneumonia, but glad he's starting to feel a little better. We were sad when Jenn got so sick and felt like she would not be able to endure another 4-6 weeks of feeling so lousy, but glad to realize it was a stomach flu and not just increased morning sickness! There are always going to be a few sad spots, hard times, but the blessings always come by and by.

It felt a little strange to go to church today and know it was the last week of Sunday church meetings as we've known it for the past 38 years. It sort of feels like we are on the brink of a huge shift, a big change, something wonderful and amazing! It's astonishing to me that we get to be part of this time in the history of the church - the history of the world! Knowing that our grandchildren will never remember or know what life, or the church, was like before President Nelson could be unsettling, but it feels more exciting than strange. I, for one, am taking my vitamins and getting my rest in anticipation of what's around the corner....

Hope the "back to normal" is a good place for all of you to be in. We are looking forward to when we will see you all again. Big things will happen this coming year, of that we are very confident!!

Any predictions for 2019????????   Send them this way and we'll publish them. As soon as I find the predictions from last year, I'll publish those, too!

Smithfield Scoop

The weeks seem to be breezing by... I hardly have time to catch my breath, not to mention accomplish anything! I spent every day this week, or at least part of every day, doing midwifery care, so I didn't get to check off all the projects on my list. But, I attended another birth- and it wasn't a breech this time. In fact, the labor went so quickly, I got there 2 minutes after the baby was born. All's well.

We did make some progress in organizing the house. I got the food storage room organized as well as possible without any shelves. It's working just fine with the bottles in boxes. I moved a few things around in the pantry and put some more things in there from the garage, which is very nice.

Dad undertook a big job when he found some odor killer to try using in the garage. He moved everything away from the walls and mopped the walls and ceiling and doors with this substance. It seems to have been effective thus far in eliminating the cigarette smoke smell from the garage. It's hard to tell if the smell has just frozen, or if it is truly gone. We will apply it next to the floor downstairs.

Speaking of downstairs, we were hoping the carpet would be installed tomorrow, but they called and scheduled us for Thursday and Friday this week. We hope it is completed before Flakes arrive on Saturday!

Besides that, we are getting a few Christmas projects done - mostly things for the YSA stake. We had a couple of visitors this week, which still surprises us. One was a gal from the ward, the RS secretary. The other was Bob Newhall, who Dad worked with for 30+ years. It was nice to have company! I didn't even worry about the boxes in the rooms and the pictures on the floor (instead of on the walls). I've turned over a new leaf and am not worrying about such things any more :)

I hope you are all enjoying some calm, peaceful, happy Christmas time. It is definitely a different kind of season this year for us. Not many decorations. Not many gatherings. Just us. But we are glad to have a home and not have to celebrate in a townhouse!

We look forward to seeing all of you soon! Watch for a Christmas Party invitation in the mail...

Hart Happenings

First off, Peter would like everyone to know that his neck is feeling a little better.  Jack had a brief brush with a sore throat, but is fine now.  Alex is also feeling better (he was never sick, but just chimed in.  I don't think he wanted to be left out.)
The week started off with our last day of Compass, our homeschool co-op, which has been a fun experience.  We got out the Christmas decorations, went and picked out a Christmas tree, and spent our FHE getting the housed decked out for the holidays.
Peter has had fun searching for our Elf on the Shelf every morning.  One day he found her snuggled up in a tissue box which she had turned into a bed.
We also attended a local production of the Nutcracker ballet.  The boys loved it!  It was actually really well done.  They also liked seeing the new Disney movie, Then Nutcracker and the Four Realms, although they said it was nothing like the ballet.  True.
One thing we always look forward to is the local glass blowing open house.  We went and watched the blower make ornaments and then picked some to take home with us.  It is absolutely fascinating and so neat to watch him blow the glass and create these amazing objects.
Jack learned how to make tin foil dinners at his scout activity this week.  He thought they were amazing and delicious.  I told him that he could make those for the family anytime!
We had fun making a quick trip down to Utah to meet Joe and a couple of his kiddos to help Mom and Dad paint some more of their basement.  I think we were all surprised at how quickly we were able to do that.  The next time any of us tries to paint something on our own it will seem miserably long and drawn out though, I'm afraid.  We make a good work crew!
Ian is practicing like crazy for Newsies.  He has practice nearly every day and he is loving it.  We have to find him some tap shoes for the King of New York number which he is excited about.
I started a 21 day Yoga Challenge through the Beachbody program Victoria is involved in.  I absolutely love it!  It feels good to focus on some physical activity every day.
On Saturday morning I had a wonderful time going to the temple with a friend of mine from our old ward who I worked with when I was the Relief Society president.  She came to our ward fresh out of jail, a recovering drug and alcohol addict with a really violent, sketchy past.  The ward family really stepped up and brought her in, we had the most excellent bishops, and for five years they have just loved her and a couple of other gals in the same position, and they have all gone through the temple this year with Nancy being the last one.  It was such a joyful day with about 40 members of our old ward there.  Just a wonderful feeling and a great, tangible experience that spoke to me about what those heavenly reunions will be like.  Joyous to the max!
Lauren, some of my favorite reads this year have been: I Capture the Castle (fiction), the Boys in the Boat (non-fiction), In a Sunburned Country (travel-logue), and The Power of Full Engagement (self-improvement).
It's a great time of year!  Can't wait to see you all.  Harts out.

Nilsson News

I'm glad to report that we survived this weekend- barely.  It was crazy!  I will not give you all the details because it exhausts me to even think about it, but I will say we went to a performance of the Nutcracker, headed up the decorating for our ward Christmas party, and survived flying solo while Garrett was in California.  He ran his best Spartan so far, a 4.5 mile rugged terrain course with 22 obstacles.  He completed all of them and so was able to avoid any penalties (30 burpees).  He earned the trifecta which was a big accomplishment for him.  Is there any kind of trifecta medal you can earn for the motherhood/housewife race?
Addy had a clogging performance at a Christmas expo and that was pretty fun.  We also went to our glass blower's open house and each of the kids got to choose a Christmas ornament.  So fun!  Elise found a fun advent idea called the 25 days of Christ that she shared with us and we have really enjoyed it.  Each night leading up to Christmas there is a certain scripture story and bible video you learn about and then an ornament that you hang on the tree.  It has been a good reminder about the true meaning of the season.
It has been nice to be over our sick stage.  It's no fun to deal with that but I guess it's a part of mortality.  This morning we enjoyed looking out our window to watch the birds at our bird feeder.  We also spotted a couple of flickers on our treehouse.  It reminded me of the good times we had growing up, looking out our huge south window at the birds in our crab apple tree and on our window sill.  We saw all sorts, including a random parakeet!
We are looking forward to seeing all of you over the holidays!  Nobody is allowed to get sick between now and then!  Love you all!

Flake Fun

This week was kind of long but we survived.  On Tuesday we had our first Relief Society activity/quarterly meeting.  It was Soup with Sisters.  We had a little soup pot luck and each of the ladies brought something that represented her.  We set them all up and played a guessing game to figure out who went with which item.  It was really fun to get to know a little more about the ladies in our ward.

The other day we went outside and the sun was shining.  We could see to the bottom of the horse tank where the fish are and they are all still alive.  Underneath the fish was a huge pile of sludge so we cleaned that out.  OH MAN!!! Who knew that it would stick so bad?  It was nasty!  But now the fish have clean(er) water to swim in!

Hope that you all have a great week and feel better.  Can't wait to see Mom & Dad's new house.  We are planning to get there sometime the weekend before Christmas.  We'll keep you all in the loop as our plans firm up!

Smithfield Scoop

At this point in time, I think I should title our post "Smithfield Suspicions." As I have been scheduling January appointments, I feel suspicious that someone has sped up the clock! Who did it?? What do you mean, the year is almost over? How on earth did that happen??

We have had snow this week. We have had lovely sunshine this week. We had some rain earlier this week. But through it all, we have had VERY cold temperatures. It is rather chilly here. More precisely, it is plain cold - freezing, actually. But that's okay, because it's December and it's winter and it's Christmas, so it's supposed to be cold. If it wasn't cold, I would be suspicious...

Our utmost gratitude to Elise, Alex, Joe, Jack, Peter, Joy and Jake who came to help finish painting the basement. They arrived Thursday morning and attacked the job with incredible energy! I had great plans to help, but ended up running to a birth and left them and Dad to do the work, as well as make lunch and dinner. I arrived home in time to eat and see the job beautifully done. After dinner, Dad and I left to take the Bennetts to a concert at USU, while Harts stayed and put the last coat on the bedroom walls. We couldn't possibly be more grateful to you all! It looks amazing. We are overwhelmed at the kindness and generosity of our family. Dad continues to work in the basement cleaning up, touching up baseboards and door frames. All should be ready by the time the carpet arrives to be installed. Again, thanks to everyone for your kindness and help.

We were very happy to have Peter and Joy and Jake grab paintbrushes and help downstairs, but I was especially grateful that they were willing to decorate the Christmas tree that we had only managed to get the lights put on. The ornaments are all hung on the bottom half of the tree, because that's as high as the decorators could reach, but it is lovely.

Other happenings this week include getting all of the locks in our house re-keyed. We have some extra sets and will put one set outside somewhere so any of you can come and stay even if we are not here! We also had the piano tuned (by a piano major friend of Lauren's and former member of Dad's stake), so you can play the piano while you are here. It sounds much better! We got a couple of packages off to Emma, then remembered some other things I was going to send. Maybe she'll get three packages this year! Additionally, I was on the committee for the North Logan 7th Ward Christmas party. My assignment was table decorations. I filled 120 canning jars of various sizes (thanks to Ruth for lending me some of her extras!) with sand and tea lights. We helped set up on Friday and refilled food trays and directed traffic. The sister missionaries sought me out to give them a ride to an appointment, so I missed the whole program at the party. Oh, well. We helped clean up and said goodbye to that ward. There are great people there and we made some sweet friendships that we treasure in that short time.

We look forward to your updates - about the health status of those who have been sick, the outcomes of Garrett's latest Spartan activities in California, about your ward Christmas parties, the travels of Thomas and Victoria in the big city, and any other news you care to report! We love you all and can't wait to see you in the coming couple of weeks!!

Smithfield... Something

Still trying to decide on our post title...

I wrote to Emma last week and listed all that had happened in the past 25 days:  Braden got married; Grandpa passed away; we planned, prepared and held his visitations and funeral; We offered and counteroffered to buy a home, which was accepted after the second time; we applied for, gathered information for and were approved for a mortgage in 21 days (which often takes up to 6 weeks here); I taught a baptism lesson to a less active family’s little 8 year old boy (which was a big deal for me!); Dad and I both spoke at his YSA Stake Conference – Dad spoke 3 different times and I spoke at the Saturday evening session; we told Brother Zook we were moving and took everything out of the townhouse and cleaned it top to bottom; we delivered poinsettias to the ladies I’ve been ministering to, as well as a few others; written countless thank you notes; and moved all of our stuff to a new home; had Thanksgiving dinner in our new home; ripped the basement carpet out; painted a purple bedroom (well, it was actually a lavender color) and met a couple of new neighbors. We did all this while trying to maintain a semblance of “normalcy” in our lives – writing to and shopping for our missionary, paying bills, doing prenatal visits, preparing meals, doing church work, etc. There are some months that are record landmark months, I guess. It really was a whirlwind and we are ready to have calmer days for a while.

We are delighted with Jenn's news and are keeping it hush-hush, as requested, but can't help thinking about it many times each day. Such a blessing. Such a miracle.

We were beyond grateful to the Nilssons and Harts for coming to help us get moved and begin the improvements in the basement. Surely wouldn't have happened without all of you! Our deepest thanks to all!

Sickness has been prevalent and we have been very glad to not have participated in it. We do hope the Mannings and Nilssons and Harts and little Joy are all feeling better now.

That's about all to report. We are just trying each day to get a little more settled. I met the bishop yesterday at church. He's nice. We've met a couple of neighbors. They seem nice too. It will be a nice place to live.  Oh, we did go cut our Christmas tree today. We didn't have to worry so much about the height because our ceilings are taller than before. There was deep snow on the mountain, so it was fun.

Maybe all of you could pray for Emma. She is struggling a little. She was told by one of the Sister Training Leaders that the president said, "If anyone can help Sister Koerner (Emma's companion), Sister Belliston can." I think you know what that means. It's a really, really rough time for her right now. Lots of responsibility and a difficult assignment. She could use some extra prayers.

We love reading the updates and are glad when you all contribute! Can't wait to see most of you over the holidays!

Manning Moments

Well, the last two weeks have been eventful. A week after Grandpa's funeral I came down with some yucky flu that I hear went around the family. Ear ache, nasty sore throat and swollen glands the whole thing. I was fortunate though and felt much improved by Wednesday and then Nick wanted a turn. His lasted a lot longer and was pretty miserable. So we were unable to visit anyone for Thanksgiving which was sad but we still had a good day and a nice weekend. The greatest blessing was that the boys didn't get sick! It was a tender mercy and we had lots to be grateful for!
This last week we had some great times including getting a Christmas tree. Wesley was pretty excited about that. We also had Nick's faculty Christmas party and what a riot. I think I laughed the whole time. What great people Nick gets to work with. The most down to earth people you'll meet. The next night we met up with Mom and Dad and Nick's parents and went to dinner and then saw the lights on temple square. Nick and I went to a Tommy Emmanuel concert while the grandparents watched the little guys. He is quite a performer and a great guitar player. Thanks so much to amazing parents who make those rare dates a possibility!
I have been very grateful for people in our ward lately. It has been an adjustment to try and be an elder's quorum president's wife and have two little boys, even two angel boys. Sunday's just aren't very restful and I can't seem to serve like I want to. But there have been so many people who notice my frantic self and step in to help and I want to be more like them!
You are all an inspiration! I hope to see you mucho during the holiday season!
Elise, I want to know what books you loved reading this year!

Flake Fun

The excitement of this week was that we got snow...well, a heavy frost...well, frost.  The weather has been pretty temperamental this week with consistent wind and inconsistent temperatures and moisture.  We did get a little bit of hail yesterday but it only lasted for a few minutes.  There really was some snow on the roofs yesterday but it was gone pretty quickly.

Things are good in the Flake household.  We are having a hard time believing that it is already December.  It has been a year since Scott moved over to working for the Town of Pinetop Lakeside. It has been a good move for him and for us.  He is working with great people and learning a lot.

On Saturday we spent a good chunk of time splitting and stacking wood.  I think we only have 2-3 more days of splitting and stacking before our big logs are all taken care of.  I noticed that the patches of grass that I planted several months ago are still growing strong which was quite exciting.  I now have confidence that I'll be able to get grass in the backyard next year!

Well, that is about all that we have to report! We haven't been sick, despite Jenn having sick co-workers.  Hope that you all have a good week!

Hart Happenings

Well, I'm not sure what happened to the majority of our post last week.  The first half (the part that is missing) was a huge excited outburst about the Flake's news.  It was the highlight of our year and still the most talked about event in our family.  The boys and Alex and I are absolutely delighted!  Congratulations to Jenn and Scott!
Ian was sick pretty much this whole week.  He got left home alone today while the rest of us went to church and thought he was going to die of boredom.  Luckily, so far, the germs haven't spread and the rest of us have felt fine.
We got snow this week which is always a thrill and Jack and Peter have spent a good part of every day since, playing in it.
Ruth and I had fun painting some Christmas ornaments this week.  It's part of an advent kit that I found.  So fun!
We had our big Come Follow Me implementation meeting for Primary today.  I'm getting so excited for it!   We got our Come Follow Me for Individuals and Families book from the bishop when we went in for tithing settlement and can't wait to get started.  It's going to be great!
Jack is loving indoor soccer and learning about outer space.  He's been on a big kick about the Mars rover and is learning a lot about it.  The other day he hopped on a program and had to fiddle with different entry angles, parachute deployment times, heat shield disengagements, rocket booster initiation, etc...to try to get his own rover landed.  It took a lot of messing around with and adjusting, but he finally got it landed successfully.  He worked on it for almost an hour before everything aligned and he didn't crash or burn up.  He is a persistent little fellow!
Peter has taken a real interest in the piano these days and spends a good chunk of his days banging away trying to pick out tunes by ear.  It is fun to watch that process, but sometimes I miss the electric piano and its volume control or headphones option.
Alex traveled to Boise this week and made it home safe and sound in spite of the weather.  Hooray!
He went for an affiliate training and had a good time with his business partners over there.
I have been reading ALOT.  This might sound normal, but it has been a real lot since I've been trying to finish up a library reading challenge along with my Old Testament that we started at the beginning of the year and then Pres. Nelson's Book of Mormon challenge.  My eyeballs are shot.  But I have read some really good stuff, so that's nice.
Hope all is well with you all and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at some point this month hopefully!  It wouldn't be the holidays without at least a glimpse of all my favorite people!

Nilsson News

Happy December!  The countdown has now begun.  It's the holiday season.  I don't know how it comes so quickly and I wish it would last a little longer.  I'm thinking back and trying to think about what I can write about, but all we have to report is that everyone has been sick.  The kids have liked to individually claim the spotlight so the sickie season has dragged on and on.  Today was the third Sunday in a row that we haven't been to church as a family.  Henry is the only one left so hopefully we will be through it soon.
Garrett has his final Spartan race this weekend.  It is in L.A. so he is flying there Friday night, racing on Saturday morning and flying home Saturday night.  Quick trip.
Sorry this was such a drab report.  I think next week will be a little more eventful.

Hart Happenings

Well, the news we got from Snowflake this morning eclipses all other news, as far as we are concerned.  There has been a spirit of jubilee at the Hart house ever since we talked to Jenn and Scott today.  Congratulations!!!!  We are beyond thrilled for the two of you...soon to be more of you....!  It was the icing on the cake of our Thanksgiving week.  We started early with a visit from Joe and his family last weekend and then the arrival of Alex's family on Wednesday who stayed until Saturday.  After they all left we jumped in the car to go hang out with Mom and Dad, get a tour of their new house, and help them with some painting.  We overlapped with Ruth's family who were going as we were coming.  Addy and Ian were lots of help getting the ruined carpet out of the basement.  It was a pretty smelly job and Ruth and I were entertained watching their funny faces and dramatics during the process.  It is a lovely house and Alex and eagerly anticipate the good memories we will make there with all of you guys!
We got home pretty late last night and jumped right into Sabbath activity this morning.  It was a lovely day at church and we were just so happy and grateful for the Flake's miracle it has cast a special little glow on our day.
We woke up to snow on Thanksgiving morning but it rained that day and it was all gone by the evening.  I feel like it was a portent of things to come......
Things are good here and I'm excited for a nice, normal, unexciting week going forward.  Is there such a thing?

Hart Happenings

Poor Nilsson!  I hope the foot zone helped Eliza.
Jack was excited about the idea of changing our post titles too if Grandma is going to.  His vote is for Smithfield Summary, Peter likes Smithfield Stunts, and Ian prefers Smithfield Smiles.  I'm with Jack and Alex is absent and therefore doesn't get to vote.
We were gone from home more than we were here this week so it seemed to go by very quickly!  It was so wonderful to see everyone at the funeral.  Alex and I came away very inspired and have had many conversations about the thoughts that came to us during that day.  So amazed to hear the lovely music that Lauren arranged!  You have a gift, little sis.  And Joe and Lori sound so nice together.  It was my favorite part of the funeral for sure.
A major highlight of the week was spur of the moment trip to Utah to see The Scarlet Pimpernel at the Hale theater.  We totally concur with Mom and Dad.  It was spectacular!  Jack even said that he liked it more than Newsies which is not what I expected at all.
It was the very best thing to have Joe and his family up this weekend.  They got here late Friday night and Saturday Alex and Joe and a friend named Jeff holed up in Alex's office to work on their cellphone etiquette presentations and GOALit app they are still holding out for.  Meanwhile, Lori and I took the kids to the Artitorium downtown and then to the local bagel shop for lunch.  It was really fun and the kids made some really fun stuff.  It is so cute to watch the cousins together.  We enjoyed visiting and playing on Saturday night and today before and after church.  They are on the road now and we hope they get there safe and sound in time for a good night's sleep!
Jack won his soccer game on Friday night which was fun to watch.
Ian is gearing up for his first band concert and is busy with rehearsals for Newsies.
Peter is really buckling down learning to read which is impressive to watch.
Life is good at the Hart house.

Happy Thanksgiving week!  We will be down at some point to help with the moving in Smithfield.  So excited for you parents!

North Logan Notes

Oh, super sad for the Nilsson kiddos :(  So sorry to Eliza and Emerson.  I do hope it is a very short-lived malady for both of them.  Can't even blame it all on Halloween this time...

So, as I clicked on "new post" and started typing in the title, I wondered what I should call the posts when we move to Smithfield. Any suggestions? Maybe we'll take a vote:  Smithfield Synopsis, Smithfield Summary, Smithfield Stunts or Smiles or Scene.... It really should be an alliteration, so help me out here! What would sound best?

I can't thank you all enough for making the effort to come to Grandpa's funeral, for driving and flying long distances, for participating, and for staying and visiting for the evening.  Dad's family felt it was a fitting tribute to Grandpa's great life. There was a wonderful, uplifting and inspiring spirit. We are still getting emails and cards and texts from people about the music that Mannings and Bellistons presented and which touched hearts and lifted spirits. Thank you so much, Nick and Lauren, Joseph and Lori, for your part in bringing the spirit and honoring your grandpa. Thanks to Thomas for being willing to be a pallbearer. Thank you all for singing A Child's Prayer. It was a very sweet thing for me to lead the singing of that song. To look at Grandpa's posterity and feel their love for him, and his for them, and to listen to his sweet, dear friend sacrifice to accompany the singing was especially tender and meaningful.  It sounded angelic and I think it touched Tim, Jordan, Daniel, John and James, in particular, and blessed everyone. Thank you all.  Here is the letter from President Nelson to Christi that I want to publish here so that it won't be forgotten. Christi also received one from President Oaks that I thought you might like to see.

Upon returning home this week, we ran full speed ahead. Dad spent the week in meetings and in preparation for his stake conference. I had a long day of prenatals. We met with the mortgage guy, then the realtor, then with the mortgage guy again. We think all of the t's are crossed and hope the i's are all dotted. We are waiting to hear for sure, but right now it appears that we will sign papers to close on the house on Wednesday morning. Thursday we drove back down to Salt Lake to attend a marvelous production of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Joe and Lori saw it last week and they told us it was a great show, but I think they severely understated just how wonderful it was! So inspiring! Such incredible talent! The Harts were there, too, and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. After the play, we drove down to Utah County once again and I got to visit with Lauren while Dad took a few things to Carl. The next morning we drove to Twin Falls, Idaho to attend a wedding of a member of our YSA stake. She was in Dad's ward when he was the bishop, so we've known her for a very long time and been through some ups and downs with her, so it was very special to attend her marriage. Then home again to get our talks ready for conference.  It makes me tired to recall the week!

Stake Conference was amazing! Prayers for good attendance, a rich spiritual feast, beautiful music, and hearts turned to the Savior were answered abundantly. Dad is still at the church doing interviews, but I hope he felt as good about it as I did. It is a tremendous burden for him to plan and prepare a conference. Now my job is to put the 5 or more pounds back on him that he lost worrying about the funeral and the conference!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We'll welcome any wanderers to this part of the country who desire to show up. It is apparently supposed to snow for this holiday, so please don't travel if the roads are not clear! I am deeply thankful for our family. Thank you for blessing my life so richly. I love you all!

P.S. I finally got Emma's last letter put on her blog, if you want to take a look at it. We'll hear from her tomorrow again....

Nilsson News

I'm sitting home from church right now with sick kids.  Eliza is having some bathroom trouble and has to go about every 15 minutes and Emerson started throwing up around 1:30 a.m.  Luckily we were able to enjoy our annual trip to Layton before this all started.  We drove down to Layton on Friday and picked up Garrett who had been at training meetings in SLC all week.  We met up with some friends and visited for awhile and then that evening we went swimming at the hotel.  The next day we visited with several ward members from our Layton days.  It's crazy how everyone's lives continue on, even after you move away.  I guess I sometimes think that time should stand still but kids keep growing up.  We took balloons over to the cemetery and sang Happy Birthday to Hyrum and Joseph.  It's a few days early but I think that is okay.  They turn seven years old this year!  That evening we went to the wedding reception for one of Garrett's priests, when he was serving as bishop.  It was a party!  We saw and visited with so many wonderful friends.  Good relationships are some of the most important things in life and I saw how true this was when I was at Grandpa's funeral.
It was so good to see all of you there and reminisce about the good ol' days.  It was crazy to see some of our cousins that we hadn't seen for years and didn't even recognize.  Like I said, time goes on whether we like it or not and everyone grows up.

It is hard to believe that the holiday season is already here.  I don't know how it sneaks up on me every year but it does.  I hope that the time can be savored and last as long as possible.  It would be great to see some of you during Thanksgiving and/or Christmas.  We are so excited to see mom and dad's new place and help them move some things in.

Just a fun ending note, I've been watching Millie and how much she watches her older siblings.  We were at Addy's clogging and Millie was just entranced with the dancing.  She would stand and observe and then start tapping her feet back and forth just like the cloggers.  Yesterday, I was having a friend work on Eliza's digestive system on her feet and Millie was there watching.  As soon as Eliza was finished, Millie plopped herself down, took off her shoes and held her feet up to my friend.  She watches everything!

I hope you all have a wonderful, Thanksgiving week!  Love you all!

Bellistons are Back

Well a lot has happened since we last wrote...6 months ago or so.  It's kind of like my journal.  So here are a few of the highlights:
Grant fell on his face and had to get stitches inside his cheek.  It was a much smoother procedure that the first time.
Joe coached  a 6 year old boys baseball team.  Grant was a star and we won every game...as long as we had more players than the other team.
The kids started school and have made a lot of new friends.  We haven't heard them ask when we're moving back to Springville for a couple weeks now.
Thank you all for helping us move out and in.  It was a long day and we definitely couldn't have done it without all of your help!
Joy and Jake learned how to ride bikes this summer.  It took about an afternoon in the church parking lot and they've been riding all over town since.  I'm a big believer in the strider bike now.
We went up to Idaho for the 4th of July to watch the fireworks and stopped by soda springs and saw a huge geyser.  It was pretty lucky because it only goes off every once and a while but as soon as we pulled up it started.  There are a LOT of cows on that drive and we were very cautious not to hit any.  Lori took it a little far and startled me when she said "Watch out for the cows!!"  They happened to be black garbage cans on the side of the road.
Lori got called to be the Relief Society pianist even though she doesn't play.  Well, she learned.  She got released today.  She's now a Relief Society teacher.
I'm liking the new job.  I've been able to record a lot of fun people including Pentatonix, Julie Beck who is our 3rd cousin, Wendy Nelson, Linda Burton, and some other supposedly famous people that I've never heard of.

We are so grateful to be part of this family.  Thank you all for helping us so much and being so good to us.  If anybody needs a place to stay this weekend, we would be happy to accommodate.

Here or some fun kid quotes for your enjoyment:

Joy: "Stop singing, Grace!  You're making me tired."

Jakes frisbee got stuck in a tree.  Dad took Jakes shoe and threw it to get it down.  Jake: "My shoe's a genius!"

Mom: "Joy can you go to the bathroom?"  Joy: "I already went last year."

Mom: "I love..."  Hope; "Oooo"

T&T In Texas

Well this weekend we were reminded how beautiful life is, and how important it is to keep positive relationships alive and strong.  Grandpa was a righteous giant, and the best example to me of how to treat people.  I remember grandpa's house in Provo the most.  As a kid, it was enormous!  and the fun play room, the swingset, and fruit trees in the back, playing music around the piano in the big family room, and all the family reunions that were held there.  He will definitely be missed, but he'll for sure keep making an impact through the lives he touched throughout the years.
October was CRAZY!  We moved to a much nicer place, with a lot more room, and many more fun amenities, so if anyone wants to come visit PLEASE DO.  It's been pretty decent weather wise, other than some random torrential downpours after it's been in the 70s.
We are trying to get our lives organized, with the side businesses, regular work, and trying to embrace all the neat things of where we get to live!  Houston always has something going on, and if there's a lull, there's always San Antonio or Dallas a few hours away!  Lots of fun places to see, interesting food to try, and unique landmarks to discover!
Nothing really out of the ordinary happening, other than the Lakers are still finding their groove, but having a much better start than last season!  And Rudy just got a haircut so he's as cute as ever!
I'll be flying in on Saturday morning around 10:30 am and leaving the following Tuesday morning.  Looking forward to seeing everyone and reminiscing Grandpa's wonderful life!

Flake Fun

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes and serenades.  I'm sorry that I wasn't able to answer many of the phone calls but they were much appreciated.  I have the best family in the whole world.  I started the day off opening a new set of speakers from Scott!  They are Bluetooth so as soon as we get the adapter, we won't have to have any more cords!!!

Then we took our car to the shop.  Scott has tried replacing multiple parts with no positive results so we took it to the professionals.  Then we headed to the valley.  Things went very well with our appointment.  Afterwards we went to lunch which was fun and then out for gelado!  To end the day we went and bought a car!  So, I was very spoiled for my birthday!

The day after my birthday we had the second annual birthday bash.  We invited a couple of couple friends over for dinner.  We made street tacos and enjoyed associating with good friends.

We are excited to see everyone next week.  We were sad to hear the news about Grandpa but felt peace knowing that Dad & Mom were there with him.  We are grateful for the good memories we have of him.

Love you all!

Nilsson News

I've been reminded this past week of how our lives are not our own and how precious each and every day is.  Our neighbor's husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack.  He was only 58.  I went to his funeral and it really made me appreciate my life even with my so called challenges.  It made me think of Grandpa and how fulfilled his life was.  What an amazing person to be related to.  I have so many fond memories of him.  I remember when I was really little, he would pick me up by my ears and I thought that was incredible.  When I was around 14, he took me and some other cousins to St. Louis MO. and surrounding areas.  I remember the fun reunions we had in Nauvoo while he was serving there.  I remember wondering how it was possible that someone could run into someone they knew no matter where it was they went.  He knew everyone!  I remember his house in Provo and the many reunions we enjoyed there.  I remember when he sold that house and I was sad but it helped me to realize that it really was just a house and there are more important things/people to focus on.  I remember writing him my scholarship letter for college, hoping I would qualify.  I remember feeling so important because my grandpa was friends with so many of the general authorities.  I loved my last name of Belliston because someone would always ask if I was related to Angus.  Yes I am, he is my Grandpa.
It feels like winter has arrived, other than the snow.  Our garden is put to bed, our leaves are raked up, our animals are fluffing up and my mind is turning to indoor projects.  There's never a moment of rest around here!  I did get a week off from having a calling.  Our stake realigned all the ward boundaries in a major way.  Dissolved one ward completely and all the wards got new names.  Everyone was released from their callings except the bishoprics.  I was soooo happy!  R.S. secretary was just not my thing.  Garrett was beside himself and pouted the entire day.  He loved his calling (YM pres.) and had the entire new year planned out.  I've never seen him so upset about something before.  9:00 that night we got a knock on the door and it was our new bishopric whom we had never met before.  They told us they were wanting to come and meet the Nilsson family (uh-huh, sure.  What do you really want?)  After visiting for a bit they turned and said that they had a calling for Garrett.  They wanted him to serve as the Young Men's President.  He was elated!  I went the whole week without being called and then Sunday morning it came, R.S. secretary.  You can't hide folks.  Don't try it.
Anyway, we enjoyed some fun with the Hart's and mom and dad.  Addy did a fabulous job at her piano competition and earned second place.  We look forward to visiting with you this coming weekend!
Emerson was thrilled to catch a garter snake we just about stepped on when we were on a walk.
EIMTA piano competition second place winner!
 It's fall!
Have you ever made deluxe home made caramel apples?  They are so fun and so easy!

Hart Happenings

It was a good week to remember and tap into the power of families.  I am writing this while the boys are playing nicely together in the background (not quietly, mind you, but nicely) and reflecting on how fun it was to have Mom and Dad up on Halloween.  Ruth and Mom and I put our heads together to try to figure out a sewing project Ruth is going to tackle, Dad and Alex ended up in the same room visiting over our heads, the kids all wandered out at different points with questions and show and tell moments, and Lauren called and we got to visit with her in between Wesley commandeering her phone.  It was so family-ish! Very fun!
It has turned very cold here, but that didn't stop us from getting our yesterday to tackle the rest of the leaves, scoop up the apples under the trees out front, and clean out the garage to make way for the snowblower.  It felt very good and productive and we celebrated our accomplishment by a big bonfire to burn some of the branches we have culled over the summer.  Good times!
We got to see Addy perform at one of her piano competitions this week which was very fun.  We were all so impressed.  She is an excellent pianist.
We enjoyed the ward trunk or treat this year and invited our friends from Florida.  I think they had a good time, but were slightly overwhelmed by the size of Latter-day Saint families!  We also went trick or treating with our friends the Martins Halloween night.  We went back to our old stomping grounds on 12th street and it was so fun to wander the familiar streets.
Peter and Jack have been seek with bad colds and terrible coughs, but the rest of us have managed to steer clear of their germs.  Fingers crossed!
We aren't sure when we'll be able to get down this weekend.  We'll make it for the funeral for sure, but how much sooner before that I don't know.  We'll be in touch I'm sure!
Here is a fun poem about Autumn for you guys:

I love the Autumn,
And yet I cannot say
All the thoughts and things
That make me feel this way.

I love walking on the angry shore,
To watch the angry sea;
Where summer people were before,
But now there's only me.

I love wood fires at night
That have a ruddy glow.
I stare at the flames
And think of long ago.

I love the feeling down inside me
That says to run away
To come and be a gypsy
And laugh the gypsy way.

The tangy taste of apples,
The snowy mist at morn,
The wanderlust inside you
When you hear the huntsman's horn.

Nostalgia - that's the Autumn,
Dreaming through September
Just a million lovely things
I always will remember.

Also, if you're looking for a really fun upbeat new song to add to your playlist check out "Like This, Like That" by the California Honeydrops.
  See you all soon!

North Logan Notese

It’s a drizzly, overcast, sullen day here in Cache Valley. That should be indicative of my mood, but there is an overarching peace and warmth that keeps pushing away the sadness. We cannot stop thinking about Grandpa and what an amazing man he was/is. It's an interesting awareness that even though we didn't always connect with him on a regular basis, the option of interacting with him - calling to check on him, asking for advice, counsel, blessings, etc., is no longer available. It's a rather lonely realization. But, that said, there are no feelings of anxiety for him or anything other than feelings of love and admiration and tenderness. Of course we will miss him. Terribly. For a long time. What a blessing to know it's all part of the Plan. And, just so you know, Dad and I "don't have any problem with the Plan of Salvation!"

Grandpa rallied enough strength to participate in our family reunion. He even went to Nephi and stood on farm soil. We read together the essay he wrote about the soil to make sure we remember the things that are most important. It completely wore him out and he wasn't out of bed much after that. His last days were filled with family, though without much conversation. All that needed to be said, had been.

Thank you all for your visits, letters, phone calls and texts. They were remembered and mentioned by him and Christi. Emma's sweet letter was beside him when we arrived on Friday morning. Grandpa loved you all very much, as I'm sure you felt and understood. He was immensely grateful, as are Dad and I, for your efforts to live the gospel. Often, he spoke of our family and his gratitude for your gifts, talents, obedience and goodness. Thank you for giving him such "joy in his posterity."

I loved Thomas' Instagram message and Emma's letter and wanted to share them with all of you, so they are attached below.

To clarify, so you all know the plan, the funeral will be on Monday, November 12 at 11:00 in Springville. There will be a visitation on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 and again on Friday morning from 9 to 10:30. I will send a copy of the obituary, or a link to it, when it is published. The schedule after the funeral will be a little different since Grandpa will, of course, be buried in Nephi. So, we will have a luncheon after the funeral and then drive to Nephi for the burial.

Jennifer and Scott will arrive on Friday, and Thomas will also be flying in, probably on Saturday. It would be nice if we could get together to visit while everyone is here, but I know that may not be possible. We would be happy to have you all here for a gathering of dinner and visiting on Friday or Saturday, if possible, otherwise we can plan on some good visiting in at the luncheon and other funeral events, hopefully. We are looking forward to seeing all of you and having some time with all of the family.

North Logan Notes

After reading Lauren's post, it appears the title is appropriate - Manning Madness!! It made me tired and more than a little grateful for the seeming boringness of our lives at the moment! Hang in there Mannings!

We were grateful that a mom and baby accommodated our wishes this week when baby finally decided to come on Thursday night (10 days late) so I could go to the family meeting/council in Springville with Dad. It really was a blessing to be there with everyone. All of Dad's siblings, with the exception of Kate, were there. There was a feeling of unity and support and gratitude and love that was beautiful and rich. Grandpa seemed to rally long enough to participate in the foundation meeting, and even traveled to Nephi to see the farm and Mt. Nebo, for what we suppose was the last time. He is very weak and failing. Dad is back down there today, sitting with him while Christi is gone. He, Dad, was able to give Grandpa a blessing while we were there, which I think was comforting and special. It's a difficult time, made sweeter by the love and support of children and grandchildren. He loves you all and is proud of your efforts to live the gospel and be good people. We will keep you updated on his situation.

We had a Regional Stake Conference broadcast yesterday, which was wonderful. Elder Ballard, Elder Curtis, Bishop Waddell and Sister Harkness all spoke from the Dee Events Center at Weber State. It was noisy there, but spirit filled where we were. We hope to fill you in on the details when we visit with you next.

Speaking of that, Dad and I hope to get a jump on the emphasis (really a re-emphasis) on family instruction by visiting each family one or two at a time and having a family council with you. We have had several things on our minds that we hope to share. We'll be in touch about that soon.

The weather here has been lovely lately, but I think we've seen the last of our 70 degree days, which we enjoyed on the weekend. The leaves are raining off the trees, which is breathtakingly beautiful! Love it! Dad took this photo of my very favorite tree in all of Cache Valley. It is always the most gorgeous thing in the fall - in front of our Hyde Park Stake Center.

Thinking of you all and loving you more every day!

Manning Madness

First of all, thanks to all of you who made the trip for Chet's blessing. It was so fun to have family over and to be supported that way. I know that those of you who couldn't make it would have come if you could!
This week was a little bit crazy! But crazy can be fun and it was a fun for sure. It was all Nick's fault I think because he expressed at the beginning of the week that he kind of felt like he was twiddling his thumbs wondering what an elders quorum president should do. Don't EVER think or say that! He has been doing lots of ministering interviews and presidency meetings but this week was a whole new level of service!
Monday night we had the elders quorum presidency and their families over for FHE and banana splits. It was a blast. Wesley was in heaven with all the attention and we got to know each other a little bit more. Nick gets to work with the cream of the crop! So fun! Well, while everyone was here for that, a brother came over for some help with big family issues. So Nick was out with him the rest of the evening. He was still trying to help that man the next day when Nick got a call for another family that needed some help getting their daughter to school because their car broke down and the girl has some challenges that complicate the matter. While Nick was making lots of phone calls for that, Wesley decided to get sick and he started throwing up everywhere. So Nick took the sad Chet and I tried to help Wesley. We had our ministering brother help give Wesley a blessing and he fell asleep for a little while. But then he woke up and threw up until about 11:30 that night. He didn't want to do it in a bowl, the toilet or the bathtub so the only reasonable place was the bed. Lots of laundry. The next day I was trying to get Wesley feeling better and Nick was able to stay home and help which was a blessing. That evening we learned about a family in the ward that got in a car accident so Nick went to visit them. The next day Nick was teaching guitar and I ran to the store with Wesley to pick something up for dinner. When I was done I got in the car and it wouldn't start. It was a low battery in those silly keys they make. I tried everything I could think of. Nick had visits in 30 minutes and Chet had just woke up hungry at the house. Nick tried to find a neighbor that could watch Chet while he came to see what he could do but the neighbors had pneumonia. I finally got the car started after I opened the door and it got the battery working again. The next day Nick's counselor 's wife had a baby. Happy day! The next day was Saturday and Nick remembered he was supposed to teach the lesson on Sunday! Sunday he got the assignment from the Bishop, "Brother so and so has a 'vote for prop 2' sign outside of his house. I want you to go correct that." Good thing Nick gets along with everybody. He is truly amazing and I think he knows what an elders quorum president can do!
I think we are all on the mend with stomach bugs and whatnot.
Chet is a trooper through everything this week. He is the cutest baby. He smiles and laughs and blows bubbles like a champ. We sure love him and can't wait for all of you to meet him!

Flake Fun

The last couple of weeks have been pretty uneventful for the most part.  After 2 weird little snow storms we are now experiencing beautiful fall weather.  We planted some winter rye as a cover crop for our garden and it is doing very well.  Somehow our tomatoes are holding on so we get a handful or two each week for snacking on.

We had our first fall social in our new ward and it was lots of fun.  We are surrounded by good, fun-loving people.

Anyway, that is about all that we have to report!  Hope everyone is enjoying beautiful fall weather.

North Logan Notes

The past three weeks have been busy and delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed being with the family for Chet's baby blessing. All that fuss and fun for a sweet little baby who was totally oblivious to being the center of such attention!! Wesley was a bit overwhelmed at first with all the cousins vying for his attention, but after getting used to it, he was quite thrilled to have people to play with. It was so nice to visit for a while after things quieted down some. Dad took Elise and Joe and Ruth for a short visit to Grandpa's. He was glad to see them, but wasn't up to much in the way of visiting. His situation causes him some embarrassment as well as consternation, but he is always pleased to know his family loves and cares about him.

We returned to American Fork the Thursday after Chet's blessing to help out a little while Nick was gone to Las Vegas for another shooting class. We enjoyed playing with Wesley and holding Chet, working to get things "winterized" in the garden and doing basic stuff like bathing boys and grocery shopping that gets tricky with only one parent. We had commitments that took us home Friday night, but wish we could have stayed until Nick returned late on Saturday. We are still waiting to hear about his adventures (hopefully without flat tires or robbery this time), though we're sure he had a great adventure!

Our favorite thing from the past few weeks was helping at the "Loaves and Fishes" community dinner. I think some of you helped provide music for one of those dinners at one time. The program started out as an effort to provide meals for homeless and/or needy folks during the holidays. Then it progressed to a meal once a month for anyone in need. Now they serve a mid-day meal every first and third Saturdays to anyone in the community who wants to attend. This week we served chili and cornbread, salad and fruit and dessert to over 200 people. Most of them are needy people and they came back to get more food to take home or to take to sick or needy neighbors or friends or folks at the senior citizen center. They are always grateful and are glad to have a good meal and people to visit with. It was heart warming to see some younger people there helping carry plates for the shaky older folks. It is a wonderful project and very satisfying to participate. I would like to go on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to help with that meal. They typically serve over 400 people that day! But, that happens to be the weekend of Dad's YSA stake conference, so I'm quite sure we won't be helping out on that day.

We had a YSA group for FHE last night. The roads to our place were closed due to the pumpkin walk, so only 4 people made it. But we had a great visit with them and learned a lot of things about growing up with convert parents in New York and Florida. The church is sometimes run a little differently in those areas.

All of our efforts at finding a home have been interesting, but unproductive as yet. We did see a nice, brand new house today and spoke with the builder. It is still a ways out of our price range, but we may talk with him about building a different house for us - if we can find a lot...  We know there is a right time and a right place - or maybe several "right" places, or possibilities. Still trying to understand patience.

We are hoping to see all of you in the near future! We love you and are grateful you are involved in so many wonderful things. Our prayers continue for Jennifer. We are getting quite excited for her! Grant had a fall at the neighbor's and ended up with some stitches in his cheek :(  We hear it is beginning to heal nicely now. Emma is enjoying her new companion, but could still use some solid missionary opportunities, so we are praying for her, too. Thomas and Victoria moved last weekend to a new apartment - and signed a 14 month lease, so I guess they'll be in Houston for a little longer! We are praying for them to make some good friends and have some more wonderful opportunities. In fact, we constantly pray for all of you because we know how hard you are working to do all you can that is good and worthwhile! We love all of you and are so glad we are a family.
